Hello!
I've upgraded dotnetnuke website on a local server without any difficulties. I tried the same on the live DNN website and its stuck with Parser Error.
Parser Error Message:
Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Common.Global'.
Source Error:
Line 1: <%@ Application Codebehind="Global.asax.vb" Inherits="DotNetNuke.Common.Global" %>
I tried to restore the website to a back up created earlier, but even that's not working. I'm still stuck with the same Parser error. When we decided we can't fix it, we submitted a ticket for our hosting providers to restore it and even they couldn't restore with any of their back ups.
Any ideas on what might have happened?? I know that posting on this forum will definitely help clear if not completely solve the issue!
Thanks in advance!!

Please describe how you did the upgrade. Which version of DotNetNuke did you start with? Did you use the upgrade package? What exactly did you do?

Hello!
Thanks for the reply. I started with DNN version 4.6.2. I tested upgrading on the local host and I was able to upgrade without any problems.
This is what I did to upgrade the version of DNN. (I'm still under the impression that we have to upgrade version by version instead of upgrading directly from 4.6.2 to 5.x.x.. Please let me know if I'm wrong)
Downloaded the Upgrade package, changed sitesqlserver settings, machine keys, turned autoupgrade to false and added the installation date in release.config, saved the file and overwrote these upgrade package files into the root directory of DNN.
The website has been restored by the vendor now and my question is can we use the upgraded copy on the local server and update it to production? How does it work and which is the easy way?
Thanks once again for the reply.

If you are starting with 4.6.2, you do not have to go through the step of editing the web.config. So, I'd recommend that you try it again. You can keep autoupgrade=false if you like.
Just copy the upgrade package over the existing root directory, and then browse to the site to start the upgrade.
I think that it's safe to try going from 4.6.2 to 4.9.5 in one step. If you want to go to 5.x, I'd do that from 4.9.5.
Remember that 5.2 has some new requirements, so going to 5.1.4 and the 5.2 might be a safer route.
Test and make backups at every stage.
