I set up DNN on a testing url on a shared hosted server whilst I was building the site.  Now that the website is ready I want my main domain name to point to the new website.

I have added the new domain as an alias under host/Portals and I have it pointing to the correct folder on the server that has the DNN installation.  But after typing in the url it gets replaced by the old domain name.

I have been doing a lot of research and it seems if I understand correctly that I have to change the IIS settings on the host header but I am told by my hosting company that I cannot do this as its a shared hosting server and that I should set up dnn again on the new domain.  Is this true? 

Is there a way of removing the old alias?  I tried do to this in Portals under Host but it does not give me the option of deleting.

I faced the similar problem while I was transferring the site from one URL (Test URL) to other URL (Actual URL).

After struggling a lot with this issue finally I deleted the old portal alias record from the PortalAlias table from my DNN database.

NOTE : Playing directly with the database is a risky option. So please take the backup of the database as a first priority.

The answer to the last part of your question is that you can delete the old portal alias. To delete the portal
alias first you need to edit the portal alias. You can do this by clicking the edit option beside the portal alias,
after the edit form is displayed, you will see the delete link.<!--Session data-->[script removed]
