Hello there I was wondering if any of you have upgraded to DNN version 5.01.00 yet either from 5.00.01 or from 4.8.x. I have tried both, trying to jump straight from 4.8 to 5.1 and also doing the double jump from 4.8 to 4.9.x to 5.1.x In the cases of 4.x to 5.1 I have discovered the following issue on both my development environment and my host environment. The 4.8.x to 4.9.x upgraded seemlessly with no flaws but then on the jump from 4.9.x to 5.01.00 the problem started right from the progress of the upgrade as in each case (weather jumpint straight from 4.8 to 5.1 or 4.8 to 4.9 to 5.1) I saw this error in the upgrade progrss: "EXECUTING SCRIPT: 05.01.00.SQLDATAPROVIDER ERROR! (SEE 05.01.00.LOG FOR MORE INFORMATION) So I opened up this log and saw the following recorded: ************************************************* System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Table 'EventLog' already has a primary key defined on it. I did find a blog in the dotnetnuke stie that honed in on this very issue but that was back in the middle of may while this was in beta at which a senior architect of DNN said he would need to create a new build to address the problem. I had picked up this 5.1 since it had been offically been released for production. In fact it was about the middle of July when I tried this out and it was realeased for production on June 23, 2009. Thanks for the post. I have reported both these things to Gemini but my request with withdrawn simply because I put the issue of 5.00.01 to 5.01.00 and 4.8.x to 5.01.00 upgrade on one ticket and since it was considred as two issues (which it was) it was withdrawn but one of their developers did comment on my discovery by simply saying in regards to the error you got that was generated from 5.00.01 to 5.01.00 upgrade this will be fixed in the stabalization release of 5.01.01 or 5.1.1 of DNN and suggested I check the road map for the progress on this release.

The road map showed no dates of expectation for production release just jobs that were checked in and their were plenty of them to say the least so my guess is we will be waiting a bit for 5.1.1 to be released for production.


In regards to the problem I ran into when upgrading from 4.8.x to 5.01.00 the person who responded told me she never heard of that problem in regards to the warning message telling me I am running an older framework than I really was or the broken links on the pictures of both admin and host menus but told me to create a new issue with just that problem so their team could take a look at it at which point I did today.

I guess my best option at this point is to go back to 5.00.01 on one site and keep my 4.8.x on the other until some more bugs are worked out from the 5.01.00 upgrade you would think that by releasing 5.01.00 for production and taking it out of beta that the DNN team would be making a statement that at least it was ready to be installed and upgraded properly even if some kinks were still in it. but oh well thanks again,

I think that your plan is a good one.  I expect the "stabilization" release to be relatively soon, but that could be a month or so.

I too would stick with your current versions of DotNetNuke until a stabilisation release. However from your first error I recall seeing this when upgrading in the past. The solution was to delete all of the content from the event log before upgrading.

Even though it's for earlier versions of DotNetNuke, it shows the methods that I used for upgrading and troubleshooting errors:

Event log

I discovered that if I upgraded the DNN Creative installation to 4.4.1 the event log viewer (Admin Menu / Log Viewer) would no longer work. The solution was to delete all of the data from the event log table before upgrading. I did this using an SQL query.
Erase all data from events table:

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that but in this case got the same error so must be something needing tweaked. But I have found that truncating the eventlog ever so often has been more then useful as well as your idea of truncating the sitelog and schedulehistory to get trash out of the application.

The only thing I lack now is trying to figure out how to recover space taken up by the anonymous user account. It has taken up more than 150 MB in the life time of my client's site on a very stingy server (in regards to space) and recouping it would be great but haven't figured out a good way of doing this.

Do you or Joe no of any way of collecting space used up by annonymous user (i.e. used up from tasks done by the applicaton opposed to space taken up by ftping something up.

I'm guessing their is some space always being utilized by anonymous user but seems like I never see the amount of MB go down in this user account just gets higher and higher as the applicatoin is called to allow user to upload info to a database and many other automated tasks but I would expect that some of this space absorbed is being wasted by the application now and needs a garbage collector of sorts.

Space taken up by the anonymous user account is not something I have experimented with. I guess you'll need to find the modules that are causing the largest amount of logging for an anonymous user and then delete their data.

To be honest I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean by space used by an anonymous user, if you want to explain it further please do.

A good tip though will be to look at OnyakTech host commander module, I covered a tutorial on this here OnyakTech Host Commander Module this module allows you to schedule SQL queries, so if you find an SQL query that you wish to regularly execute to clean up your database, this module can be really handy.

My hosting account has what is called

"Anonymous ASPNet User"

I asked the tech people at my hosting account about aspnet user accounts and they gave me the following answers:

The anonymous aspnet user is the username thats your application uses to operate.

his is the user account used by your web application. Tasks performed by your web application are done so using the the asp.net user.

It seems like I had asked them a question about how to clean up space that this user absorbed and they didn't seem to have a good answer this it would be more of a dnn question on how it releases this information but this was where my confusion lay which is why I asked here.

I don't know if this helps you understand better what I am speaking of when I speak of an annonymous user absorbing
space but basically what that means is when the annonymous asp.net user account reaches the quota allocated for it you can no longer perform tasks in the dnn application such as reuploading a csv file of calender events for DNN to populate or anything that requires data being utilized by the web application.

I am certain that their's got to be useless space out their that this annonymous user is using since the space taken up by this user just seems to grow and grow and for some reason never can be shrunk unless of course it is known how dnn handles the exchange of this data.

Maybe I should look into finding out if their is some central place in the web application where this space is stored that can be released via deleting like schedulehistory, sitelog, and eventlog data after so long ends up just being bulk that is really not needing to be in the database.

I'm afraid that we cannot change the ownership of the file, but you should be able to delete the files that were uploaded through your web application and that of course will clean up some of the disk usage that this specific user is accessing.

I will also recommend that you visit the DiscountASP.net Community [http://community.discountasp.net/] where you would be able to ask other users on how to code your application to upload without using Anonymous User.

You know what is strange here Lee and Joe is that really all that I can think is happening is I have a custom module that allows our admins to upload a member directory via csv file and when they do this their is code that truncates all data in the table and than repopulates it with info in that csv file.

We have a couple modules doing this and it almost appears that every time a new member upload or event upload occurs more bytes gets added to this user. You wouldn't know how to get arround doing this upload without the annonymous aspnet user getting data added to it?

Maybe this is something I will have to explore because I sure hate to see all this space that annonymous aspnet seems to be claiming that is simply data in a database driven by a module dynamically populating it via uploading the same file name with a csv extension but of course it would be larger every time the database is repopulated though the question is why does annonymous aspnet get filled up for this when it seems like it should only be the sql database usage that should be effected.

hmm well if anyone has any ideas of how to get around the need for annonymous aspnet to have to have data added to it when using the web application to populate a table in a database via the click of a button at the front end level please let me know because yes this table is certainly growing larger and larger at every upload and yes the sql database I have should be showing more and more MB being taken up but again why annonymous aspnet.

The problem with this annonymous aspnet user getting filled is when it hits its quota an upload of a csv file is not allowed because this users space quota is reached even though the database in which is being populated has not near reached its quota so in my case causes me to pay for more hd space simply to allocate more of it to this annonymous aspnet user.

Yes I know discountasp.com is stingy on hd space and bandwidth but it would cost my client more to move over to a less stingy host at this point than to continue with it though I know the time will come where I need to move them over to a more generous host like ixwebhosting.com.

thanks for all of the information, that makes it a little clearer but I am not experienced in clearing out data for the anonymous user. It could be worth contacting the module developer of the documents upload module you are using and see if they have any suggestions.
