I have a pdf file currently in my portal root directory that I can't seem to delete. This folder is insecure-file system. I've tried both hightlighting the file and clicking on the red X to delete, or checking the box and using "delete files" at the heading. In both cases the confirmation box comes up and I click ok and it looks like it does it (no errors) but the file remains. (I've confirmed that it truly remains by looking at the folder through FTP.) I've also tried deleting the folder via FTP and then coming back into DNN File manager expecting that I could then synchronize. It still appeared in file manager after synchronization, although it is no longer there. This is true whether logged in as admin or host. No file attributes are ticked. Any thoughts?
BTW Lee, your tutorial on file manager was helpful - as always. Speaking of file attributes one simple thing I'm embarrassed that I don't know and was the one thing not touched on in your tutorial, what to the attributes r, h, s, a refer to?

Hello and welcome to the forum!
- This sounds like a tricky problem. I would delete the folder via FTP first.
Then in the FileManager when you synchronise make sure you do a recursive sync. - Make sure the main portal folder is selected first to ensure that it re-syncs all of the files and folders on the system, as in the tutorial.
Hopefully this will fix it, I'm un-sure why this problem has occurred.
He he! - well we can both be a bit embarrassed as I don't know the full meaning of the attributes either! - I think they are referring to the read / write / execute permissions that you can set up for your folders and files within windows, but when I experimented with them I couldn't find any obvious answers. - Could be worth asking in the main DNN forum to see if anyone can provide any clues!
Hope this helps solve your problem, Thanks,
Lee Sykes

Thanks for the reply, Lee. In doing further reading through forums at DNN, it seems that this is a "feature" of DNN. The issue is that if you delete a file via FTP, a host's control panel, or similar means, DNN file manager synchronization does not remove that file name from its list. Synchronization will add names of files that have been added via ftp (as you demonstrated in your tutorial) but will not remove names of deleted files. Apparently, according to one seemingly knowledgeable post that I read, this is to prevent dead links. (I don't fully understand that rationale, if it is true). I did find a module written by Dave Buckner (TRTPortalFileMonitor) which allowed me to delete the orphan and fix the problem.
Evidently the bottom-line lesson is just don't delete any files by any method other than DNN file manager!

Regarding the four file attribute settings, here's the short reply I received in the DNN forum:
"the attributes are file system attributes, that have no effect on the usage in DNN (IMO these check boxes can be dropped from the filemanager). File permissions are set per folder in the check boxes at the end of the page."
That sheds a little light on what they are.
