Hello,

I am new to DNN and I have recently downloaded the source code version (4.9.3.21).  I have opened the project using VS 2005 and upon compliation, I get a load of errors - I have included a sample below.

I was going to start looking into changing the code in order to rectify these errors, but I don't think that I should.  I was expecting to be able to run the source code version from Visual Studio without any intervention.  The reasons for me wanting to do this, is to further understand the DNN Framework.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

I think I know what the problem is. I realised that there was no web.config present in the web site project, so I renamed the development.config file to web.config and the compilation has come back with no errors.

This seems to have done the trick. (crosses fingers )

You probably should not be using the source code version for your site.  The "install" package is recommended for live sites.

If you do want to dig into the source code, that's what the source package is for.

I intend to use the install package for my production site. I am using the source code version locally for educational purposes as I am interested in finding out how the dnn framework works.

Great. I'd recommend the Professional DotNetNuke 5 book (and also the 4 version) for lots of good background information about how DotNetNuke works, and also some explanations of various design decisions.

Got similar problem after downloading the source for 5.1.0.  I did rename development.config to web.config.  When I open the DotNetNuke_VS2008.sln that came with the source I get 32 errors which seem to show that I am missing some modules.  for example I get many "Name 'Channel' is not declared."   do you have any hints for me?  thanks  shraga

UPDATE: resolved.  Needed to build the DotNetNuke.Syndication project, then all errors disappeared.
