Only my second day playing with DNN and I'm trying to setup my SMTP server, I believe I need to get to the Host settings page.

Do I need to create the host account?, all the documentation I've read states "Navigate to Host" but I can't see anything relating to that on my site (its just the example template site in VB2005).

The "Host" and "Admin" accounts should have been created when you installed DotNetNuke. How they were created depends on the version you installed. If you installed an older version, the default passwords are dnnhost and dnnadmin. If you installed a current version, you would have been prompted to provide a password.

To navigate to the Host pages, you must login as host.

I spotted the admin login when I installed it but not the host.

This will work if you can look into your database tables. Use SQL Server Management Studio to peer into the database's tables.

I'd make a backup first.

First, verify that there is a "Host" account.  You will find users in the aspnet_Users table. 

Next, create a new user and find that user in the aspnet_Membership table. 

Finally, copy both the Password and PasswordSalt from the new user's entry in aspnet_Membership to the same fields for host.

You should now be able to login as host.

In the latest version it seems that you choose your own id instead of using Host during the install process - so try the username and password you put in during install instead of using host
