I'm going to be building a multiple language site, so I'm interested
in hearing your thoughts on the state of the art in DotNetNuke sites
that support multiple languages. What are people using? What works? What doesn't work? Where are the gaps?
I'm particularly interested in:
- Menus that support multiple languages
- Modules
I also have requirements to make certain pages/tabs visible or not visible depending on the language that is selected. How?
I may need to make some modules appear/disappear depending on the language. How?
And, I'm just generally interested in how people go about the task of building a website that supports multiple languages. Are there any showcase sites that do multiple languages? Where?
Thanks!

Those good guys and a few others are on my list. I haven't actually begun this project -- hope to get it going early next week -- so I haven't done a lot of in depth research. But, it seems like there are the right mix of modules available. I think that this might make a good case study once it gets under way. |

I am going to create an site with multilanguage selecting feature .I want that user select the language and whole content and menu list and whatever the text is on that should be converted in that language. I tried to it by using host language editor and setting but found that my date is converted according to the language host selected.so please let me know how I can make it posible that I can present this site with multilanguage feature |

There are several modules around that seem to help with this. As far as "converting text" ... nothing does that. But there are modules that allow you to have multiple texts, one for each language.

I have a question regarding DNN and multiple languages. I have a basic site I did for my uncle in English and now he wants to have a link at top that's for French speakers. He wants it exactly the same as it is now except a french version. What would be the best way for me to do this with DNN? Thanks in advance.

I don't have a detailed description, but you will need to convert the website to use multi-language menus and modules. If you will look for "multi-language" at Snowcovered and other places, you'll find some. There are also some free modules.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, I'm digging through some of this, but I'm not yet ready to describe my results.
If you find something that works, please let us (all) know.
And remember, you aren't going to be finding modules that automatically translate your content.

Any updates on your project and what you're using to handle multiple languages in one portal? Obviously I know it doesn't translate for you, but I would need to be able to select a language and based on that selection the navigation would change to that language as well as display the text modules that are written in that language. Thanks. |

I've obtained the multi-language modules from Apollo Software, and also purchased several language packs. The language selection part works, but I haven't yet begun to translate menus. I have verified that the multi-language text/html module does what it is supposed to do.
(For several reasons, this project is proceeding somewhat slower than I intended.)

I have always had "Localization Problems", BIG; BIG ... Recently I made a very "best experience" with: the GREAT localization extention developed by adequation-dotnetnuke: http://www.adequation-dotnetnuke.com/I simply did everything I just needed for me, from content to costum modules, it even localized the content coming from the database! This module is available for free download from snowcovered, if you want you can make a donation to support the development work. Althoughthey offer it free, the support of adequation considers patiently your possible problems/questions as long as your problem is been solved. Really recommndable! |
