Good Evening,

I've installed DNN 4.9.1 on my client's server that's running SQL Server 2005 Express.  I've used the service area configuration to allow remote connections via named pipes only.  I created a database, a user with db_owner privileges. 

When I run the DNN install from my browser, I choose SQL Server 2000/2005 Database, provide my server name and database name, uncheck integrated security, provide db username and password, and check run as DB Owner. 

Unfortunately, I receive the following error:
Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 20
Number: 2
Message: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

What, if any, changes should I make to my install choices or database?

If this is an SQL Express server, you should choose that in the Wizard, not SQL Server 2000/2005 Database.

It would appear that you made other correct choices.

When the Wizard runs, use the Test Connection button and you will get error reports if DotNetNuke cannot connect to the database server.

I am experiencing the same error when I am trying to install DNN. 
I am also using SQl Express.

I have created a database called DotNetNuke and it resides in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory. I have created a user id and granted it db_owner privileges to the database.

When installing DNN I selected SQL Server 2000/2005 Database within the wizard specificied my Server name and Database Name and user id. I get the same message as this person.
I do not want to use the SQL Server 2005 (Express) file option in the database, as then I have to use the database file in the APP_Data directory.

I was wondering why I can not connect to the database I have created?

I have checked my protocols for SQL express in the SQL Server configuration manager, set them to enabled and stopped and restarted the service.

I played a bit more, added "\SQLExpress" to my connection string in web.config and also to my Server name in the wizard and the connection test was successful.

I am guessing this is correct, since it worked.

If your connection string passed the test, that means that you connected to a database and have the necessary permissions.  If the database name is the one that you want to use, then you should be ok.
