I want to have a link to a file on an unprotected page of the site.  If someone clicks on the link and they are not logged in to the role authorized to see the file, I would like for them to be taken to a login page rather than receive a "not authorized" message.

Does anyone know a way to do that?

for a really simple question I don't know - In the past I have just used a module that displays when a user does not have access to the area + linked to the login page - I used ventrian subscription tools module for it as you can select what content the various security roles can view, so for the subscriber role I just add a space so the module appears to disappear.

In the future DNN 5 you could prob add the login module to the page and get it to display when a user is NOT in the correct role.

I hope this question is related to the original question in this thread (I have to say I didn't understand the answer though!)

On our website there are various protected pages that certain users (with the appropriate roles) can access.

If an individual tries to access a page when not logged in (a page they would normally be entitled to view if they were logged in), they get sent back to the login page and, when they have logged in, they go straight to the home page.

I would rather they were presented with a login prompt and then, when they have successfully logged in, they would be taken to the protected page that they had initially requested.

Is this possible??

Yes.

I would guess that your site is configured to redirect users to the Home page after they complete the login process.  This option is located in the User Settings page that you can reach from the User Accounts admin page.

ok, so under the User Settings page there are three boxes that look like candidates

Redirect After Login
Redirect After Logout
Redirect After Registration

for each of these settings there is a dropdown box that contains the names of every page on the site

The trouble I have is that I don't want to set it to redirect to a specific page after login - I want it to remember which protected resource was accessed and then redirect to whatever page that was after login.

This doesn't seem to be available as an option under User Settings

If you leave the entry blank, i.e. no page selected, you should see that behavior you want.
