DotNetNuke 4.3.3 site loads very very slow

Does anyone know why DNN is loading very slow on first use. I have uploaded my site and if it hasn't been accessed for a while, it takes around 40 seconds to load. After this, if I use the site, the site goes reasonably well. It is just if the site has been sitting idle for a while. I've tried searching these forums as well as google but could not find anything really useful. I just found some sites that gave tips on trying to improve the performance of pages but not particular to DNN. Just generic asp.net projects. I would think that DNN 4.3.3 would not need any tweaking as a final release. I also created a simple test page that says "hello", and the results are still the same. I have conducted this test both where I host the site and on my local dev box and the results are the same. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks Jim.

Hi Jim, It's because it takes approx 17 secs for the first load of DNN. This is because the server has to load the website into its memory. If there have not been any visitors within a certain period of time, the server unloads the website from its memory. The time length for this unloading depends on your hosting provider. - On DNN Creative, if it hasn't received a visitor within 10 minutes, it is unloaded from memory. So, on low traffic sites, this is why the first load takes a long time. The workaround to this is to regularly ping your site. - Some people sell modules for this, but here is a free method ;-) Go to: http://host-tracker.com/ Create a free user account and then add your website details in there for it to monitor your uptime. - Set it to check every 5 / 10 mins on a low traffic site. - It will then visit your site and keep your website in the servers memory. Of course, bear in mind this will set your site stats slightly out. Thanks,

Thanks for the update Lee. I will upgrade to 4.3.4 ASAP. I also found an interesting article regarding performance. It can be found here: http://www.odetocode.com/Articles/417.aspx It talks about precompilation for ASP.NET 2.0 - "In Place Precompilation" and "Pre-Compilation For Deployment". I tested this on my dev box and found that "In Place Precompilation" really boosts performance on first visit to the site by around 50-60%. Unfortunately, most people probably cannot do this with their ASP.NET provider. I also tried the 2nd method on my dev box and found things got quite screwed up. Especially if trying to change skins/containers. Interesting article anyway. Thanks again. Jim PS: How many of you are there :-). It is really good to see that you answer just about everyone's questions. It is really appreciated and in my opinion the support level on this site is paramount to say the least.

I had the same problem. The reason is that the application domain times out every 20 mins if there is no activity, the first request after the timeout can force a recompile and reload of cache. Changing some settings in the machine.config file will solve the problem; unfortunately for me my hosting provider would not allow me to make this change. I found this utility to be useful. http://www.spikesolutions.net/ViewS...f6eded3b82 Essentially it "Pings" my home page every few mins so the application domain does not time out. The utility can also be configured to ping more than one page so that auxiliary pages are fast too.

Hello Jimpan, Yes regular pinging is what I recommend for when your site is first starting out, once it is established the traffic keeps the DNN installation in the servers memory. Well, there is myself who creates the videos etc. Joe who helps out in the forum Rich who helps out with editing the videos. Joe and Rich have recently come on board in the past couple of months and have been a great help, I no longer have to work 16-18hour days 7 days a week ;-) to keep DNN C up and running! Cheers,
