I have used google analytics module in my site. I have tried several things with the Google Analytics and it just does not seem to work.  I have checked the tracking code number multiple time along with verifying the URL and all.  I do see the tracking code when I do a view source on the site.  The code is at the top of page rather than at the bottom as I normally see.  I understand that having it at the top will not be good for optimization because it is before the Meta tags and the search engines don’t like that.  Do you have any idea why Google does not see this code?  I really need to get the tracking working for this site.  Is there an updated module that needs to be installed since Google has been enhancing their service recently?

I have not used the Google analytics modules so it is hard to comment.  For Google analytics I simply add the code to the bottom of the default.aspx page - this will provide analytics information for all portals in my DotNetNuke installation.

When I look at the code in my default.aspx file using notepad, it does not appear to be html - it does not show the tags or at the opening and end.  Here are the last few lines -

Should I add google analytics code at the end of this page of code?

No.

If you want to add Google analytics code, it's best to do that in your skin file(s).

The file you are referring to is the default.aspx.vb file, the file I was referring to in the previous post was the default.aspx file.

If you add the code in here it will track analytics for all portals in your install, or you can add the code to your skin as Joe suggests and it will then just track the analytics for wherever the skin is displayed.

Bear in mind when you upgrade if it is added into the default.aspx file, you will need to copy the code back into the new default.aspx file - whereas when it is in a skin it will not be affected when you upgrade.

Quick question - can you insert the code in the page header of a public page's settings to make this work as well?

Yes you should be able to do that, however the Google analytics will only be applied to the page where you have added the code. To add it to the whole site, it's best to add the code to your skin files (best for individual portals) or the default.aspx file (for adding the code to all portals).

I am far (far!) from an expert in html coding but isn't the header tag above the body tag? I also thought let's just put the code in the page header (or footer for that matter) of that particular page, but doesn't the following from Google contradict that thought?

The code should be placed between the and tags, in a valid HTML location. It should not be between the < and > of any other tag.

Yes you are correct, that code however is for the Google Conversion Tracking, rather than the Google Analytics.

Doing a bit more reading, for Analytics it suggests:

"Implementing the code: Once you find the code snippet, copy and paste it into the bottom of your content, immediately before the closing body tag of each page."

So, the page header tags is probably not the best place.

As another alternative you could place it in an already existing module on a page, such as a Text / HTML module.

Go to the Settings for the module / advanced settings - Header / Footer

You could place the code in the Footer or Header section and this will ensure the code is placed inside the body tags.

Just to add my 2 cents, since i just went through adding the Google analytics to about 20 sites, I did it the simple way, I added the text/html module to the Bottom of my page and copied the code from google in as Source in the module and put a header of "GOOGLE ANALYTICS DO NOT DELETE" than I made sure I let the module be used on ALL pages. Works fine I have been tracking for over a month with good results. Webmaster tools from Google are a little more involved.

Just curious about one thing.  If I have three sites that I am hosting in a DNN installation, is it possible to track and report on each site individually?  The reason I ask is because Google Analytics provide a tracking id like so:

var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-9021435-3");

Each site I have registered at Google Analytics has an individual tracking code. 

So I can't see placing this in at the bottom of the default.aspx page will track and report on each site individually?

Put the Google Analytics code in the skin file, or use one of the Google Analytics modules that is available and place it on "all pages."

That way, you can have separate IDs for each site.
