Hi, I would like to know what are the major limitations of Dotnetnuke? What are the concerns to use DotNetNuke instead traditional ASP.NET application?
Thanks, Kishore

Hi Kishore, That question is quite a debatable topic. I can give you my own personal experience. The one major drawback of DotNetNuke I have witnessed is the Site Log that comes with it. It is a hog and will grind your installation to a halt. Saying that, however, you can simply turn it off and your site should run just fine. When you say "traditional ASP.NET application", just what are you referring to? I don't think there are any "traditional" ASP.NET applications, unless you are referring to other specific applications. In which case, I would be unable to say what the other concerns would be versus the other ones. I did do quite a bit of personal research before I settled with DotNetNuke and have been happy, overall, with my decision. Hope that helps, Mark |

Mark, I assume that you are aware that you can schedule regular maintenance of your database and trim the site log on a schedule. For large and busy sites, I would think that this is a must. As for advantages/disadvantages of DotNetNuke relative to ASP.NET, remember that DotNetNuke is "just" an application written for DotNetNuke. The great advantage is the website building framework written for ASP.NET. That is also it's greatest disadvantage. You must live within the framework ... or extend it. Fortunately, the ability to extend the framework is great, so the advantage outweights the disadvantage, imho. The greatest mistake that I see people making is not understanding the framework, and then getting all frustrated by trying to fix it. |

Hi Joe.
Mitch Sellers actually recommended that I turn the Site Log off. Failing to have a different view on the site log, I went with what he said since he seems to know what he's doing with the product. After turning it off, my website went from crawl to super speed.

If you aren't using the data in the site log, turning it off is a fine idea. |

Have you first registered? You will not be able to see any downloads unless you first register with DotNetNuke.com, and then sign in. Then, once you click on Download, you will see the download files that are available. |

I don't believe that a Starter Kit is available for 5.1.2. I don't know why, but I would expect to see it available "soon."

Sure. Use the Install package. The starter kit adds some tools into Visual Studio that aren't necessary, but might be helpful if you are doing module development and packaging. If that is the case, the tools available in the 5.1.1 Starter Kit probably are sufficient until the 5.1.2 Starter Kit is available. |

If you must have the starter kit, I'd use 5.1.1.
But, I would use the 5.1.2 Install package, and I would add to it the template files for modules available on Codeplex. Search for DotNetNuke at Codeplex. You'll find the templates, and that is all that you need.
And, if you are seriously interested in developing modules, be sure to pick up a copy of Mitchel Sellers' book (I think that's it's available now as an e-book in PDF format). Also, Michael Washington's adefwebserver.com web site.
