I am having issues creating multiple portals. I am in an environment where my VMWare Win 2003 server is apart of the domain and can be seen from other machines... ie internal developer machines. I would like to create sub domains like such philly.sitename.org and boston.sitename.org. My main DNN site is working great at sitename.org but I can't get to philly.sitename.org unless I type in sitename.org/default.aspx?alias=philly.sitename.org. I can see the page, add a module but non of the navigation works properly and will send me to a 404 error page.
Here is what I did: added the alias of philly.sitename.org to the newly created portal's alias section. Went into IIS, right-clicked on the server name -> properties ->web site tab -> advanced and added a http header named philly.sitename.org that pointed to default (also typed in the box ip address) . I tried the subdomain again and it didn't work. Also, intalled DNS (I'm a developer and I have never used DNS or configured dns), added a name server named the same name as my win 2003 box and added a CNAME entry named philly.sitename.org that pointed back to the default dns entry. I tried it again and no luck. Restarted the web server and no luck.
I watched all 3 of the portal videos but they address a hosted situation. I have a ticket into the helpdesk to talk with a sys admin about dns and creating a sub domain on this server.
Advice would be a great help here. Any hints?
thanks,
Rob

If you want subdomains to be pointed at your DotNetNuke installation, you do need to have a DNS server set up correctly. If you added a DNS server to your local machine, you will need to make sure that it it properly configured. You need to have your DNS entries propagated to the entire DNS universe. This is way beyond my level of expertise.
Oh, and you shouldn't be adding http headers in your IIS.
Maybe someone reading this can fill in some details.

Thanks for the reply. I would really like some DNS Admin feedback on how to do this but I'm sure it would be a signifigant post. I have google searched all my knowledge up to this point. I will try it without the IIS setting but from what I have read, the IIS host header is one step in the process.
I wonder if I can accomplish the DNS settings on the win 2003 server the web server is on or if it is the DNS server for the domain. Being a subdomain, I would assume I could control that from the same box.
Thanks

Do you own "sitename.org"? Does browsing to sitename.org take you to that portal?
If the answers to the above questions are "yes" then you should ask whoever manages those DNS entries to also point philly.sitename.org to the same IP address.
You don't use the http headers because DotNetNuke will take care of connecting the incoming requests to the right portal, be it a child portal or a parent portal.

Joe, I am using sitename
.org as a stand-in domain name because the domain name doesn't matter... to answer your question, yes we do own and host our domain. I was trying to get a feel for how a DNS works. I am guessing that we will have to put in an internal DNS new subdomain request and have the network guys create one. I was wondering if I could have accomplished it using IIS (and you explained why not) or a new DNS server on this box of the domain (but I guess it needs to happen on the main DNS server).
Thanks for your comments, they helped me to better understand the issue I am having.
