I am about to embark on a epic journey...... one which will have me pulling my hairs out, no doubt.

I am about to build my first ever admin system using DotNetNuke. For example the user logs in as administrator and should be allowed to see some sort of "news manager" which they can go into and add, edit, delete news articles. The "news manager" link should only be visible when the user logs in (abit like the host/admin menu items when you log into your portal)

I would like to know if this is possible with DNN and also if there are any videos here on DNN that can help me on my way??. ( oh also, Im a subscriber to the DNN magazine)

Any guidance by experience "nukers" would be very much appreciated.

Yes, this can certainly be done.

But, you don't want users to login as Administrators. Instead, you'd create a special security role that permits logged in users to edit a particular news module. Do you have requirement to prevent them from editing other submissions, or deleting?

You can use something like the Ventrian news module. But, you'll have to pay some attention to the privileges that you grant users. Ventrian has multiple levels of control. You could, for example, let one class of user add items, but leave it to another class to approve, modify, delete, etc.

And, there are LOTS of video tutorials that can help you. If you scan the (long) list, I'm sure that titles will jump out at you. And ask us lots of questions ...

For my scenario there will only be one user, the administrator. The admin user has full rights to add, delete or modify pages, edit the news module, change skins etc.

I am looking at the list of videos at the moment, nothing clearly stands out (at the moment), but i will keep looking.

The Administrator account has access to everything, so he/she can add news items.

This tutorial pointed out some of the basics and has got me on my way.

However, I would like to know where are the associated code-behinds for the Ventrian News Articles. Every user control i have built has a .aspx and a .aspx.cs (or .aspx.vb). The reason i ask is if i want to modify the functionality of the module, now do i do it without the code-behinds?

Im sure many people are in the same situation, Could anyone help me out here a little?

If you want to edit the source code of the module, I would suggest asking in the ventrian forum as Scott (the module developer) will probably be able to give you some good tips. Thanks,

Just to add to Lee's answer, Ventrian's download page has both Source and Install versions of the modules. If you've subscribed, you can download the source version to look at the full source code. The Install versions are compiled, so the codebehind pages are compiled into the dll files. You won't see the source codebehind pages in the Install versions of the modules.
