Hello All
I have
recently had a lot of downtime on Smart-Thinker,com due to unexplained WH4L
outages, so I decided to try PowerDNN.
Out of
interest, I am posting the results here – hopefully this will help anyone else
if they are thinking of switching hosts. I should also state that I have
nothing against WH4L – they do respond relatively quickly, but my site was
chugging along and seemed to go down for no reason every now and again. I will
leave the old website on WH4L for a few weeks as a speed comparison so you can
judge for yourself.
Please do
NOT update data on the old site as it will be discarded. I also recommend that
you only judge the speed after your first hit in case the old site has not yet
been loaded. The site is 99% identical (about a week out of date) so any speed
differences are down to the hosting server. Out of interest, I ran the 2 sites through
a website speed-tester, and you can see quite a difference!

| My kinda hosting provider!! Exremeley knowledgable and most important friendly. Hosting packages with ideal monthly payments, maybe a bit pricey. However, their service, staff, and description of facilities are outstanding. Not to mention, they are recognised as "DNN Platinium Benefactor" for their services and knowledge of DNN. Thanks to Rodney's post on Smart-thinker, i was convinced to accept due to their impressive results |

Just signed up with them .. they are going through a major overhaul of their control panel, etc .. but they are working hard and bend over backwards to take care of things.
I like them so far and I intend to stay with them.
I register domain names on 1and1 and then forward to powerDNN name servers to start the process. |

HI,
I have my site www.virtualgolfsociety.co.uk with PowerDNN, and its true Tony is beyond helpful and really work hard to get your site working.
Sadly I do have one problem which I think Tony has given up on as he cannot find a solution. My "remember login details" no longer works. It used to when I hosted at home but since moving to PowerDNN it no longer works. I am sadly still running DNN1 but the site works well except for this problem.
I am also having trouble uploading data in to my DB's. I have static tables that I use as lookup (I have created a lot of new modules).
I would be even happier with Tony and PowerDNN if someone could help out with these two issues.
The login is the biggest problem as my members are complaining but the upload is also important as I need to upload some new data.
Can anyone help??

I've got the same problem with my sites on PowerDNN. I have raised it with Tony and at first I thought it was a 3.2.x error (or 4.3.x) but I using the old 3.x version still and getting the same logout problem.
Maybe it's the virus scanner or something that is deleting the cookie?

| I have been using PowerDNN for a while now and have no complaints. Tony has helped me out in the middle of the morning when I have had problems due to my errors. Nothing but exceptional support and Knowledge about DNN. And performance has never been an issue. I am a satisfied customer and highly recommend PowerDNN for anyone looking for a good professional host. |

From GoDaddy thru Reseller Choice and now to PowerDNN
The migration to PoawerDNn was easy - Just provide an "zip" of the files and a "bak" of the database.
Unfortunatly I set it up using a "spare" domain name www.AgingSafelyHosting.com while my production site was still at GoDaddy as www.AgingSafely.com The database had portal aliases for both so this made testing easy.
PowerDNN's control panel took some getting used to as one would expect, but works fine.
While I was finishing my testing the menu disappeared from my GoDaddy site without any help from me, so I quickly decided the NOW was the time to finih the migration. What was remaining was for PowerDNN to rename several items from AgingSafelyHosting.com to AgingSafely.com. Somehow in the process write permissions disapeard from several important directories. The site worked but I couldn't upload files, install modules etc. I could only change items that were located in the sql database.
It took 3 tickets before PowerDNN got the permissions right, but they did and the problem was not visable to my customers. All is working well and I am happy with them.
I never had a complaint about speed at Godaddy and my site is about as fast at PowerDNN. I am much happier with the support, tools, people and capabilities at PowerDNN.

I have lots of downtime problem with WebHost4Life (WH4L), and I am sending my 7th remedy ticket to them. I sincerely hope to find a solution, but without solution, I will be obliged to move... 96% of uptime is not good enough for me (~1 hour downtime each day, regularly one continuous hour !!).

I too am still happy. They seems to have 30-90 minutes downtime every couple of weeks in the middle of the night (~11PM PST). I know this because i have Host Tracker setup to email my cell phone when the site is down for more than about 30-40 minutes. Tony claims this is do to MS critical patches being applied. I would have though that they would apply the autpmatic patches on a test system PRIOR to inflicting them on us for the first time. However, no customer has noticed.
The support is great.
I'm not sure if you are talking about remembering the login to the Plesk control panel or DNN. If it is DNN you are talking about a web.config entry will make DNN remember you for ever unless you logout.

Hello David,
My main problem currently is DOWNTIME (1 hour every 2 days). For me, this is not possible anymore. Do you imagine this website unavailable 1 hour every 2 days ?
Their support is great, they already moved me 2 times (Web server and database and application pool). It works 7 days, and then come a new customer (I imagine), and I have downtime.....
Very very sad, I have tried 3 hosting for the moment.... I do not really want to change, but if I am obliged...

When I moved from GoDaddy, PoweDNN made it easy. I had cloned from Godaddy to localhost and upgraded to a later DNN version. All I did was gice them the zip of the files and the bak of the database.
They had a problem a while ago where you could backup your site automaticall and on demand, but the Pleask tools didn't do the restore correctly when done by the user. I had to restore once and whenh it failed they imediatly offered do the restore by hand and email when it was done. It is well worth the $20/mo.
They keep asking me to upgrade to the $50/mo package but aren't real clear what I get besides twice the resources and a static IP. If I could get 2 IP's on different class-C subdomains and place my "parent portals" on one IP and my primary domain on the other, so that Google would treat them as different sites I might consider it worth it.
The one downside of PowerDNN is that I can't use them for email. They lump the web and email into the same 1GB of space, so I don't dare host my email there. I am using Google Apps and have it there where I get 100 accounts with 2GB each for free. The spam handling seems good, but I have occasional pop-timeouts.

if you follow lees tutorials about transfering from your local host to your live server, powerdnn does not give you access to restore your sql .bak file. My experience doing this was to give up at about 2pm which started at about 8 am. and I decided to just wipe out the site and start a new installation and just copy the html and recreate the site, which seemed to be faster since it only took me 3 hours to recreate the site and it took about 6 hours of the site being down. I followed all of the steps and have transfered sites from local to live at other hosts sucessfully. lees tutorials worked fine at webhost4life. powerdnn suggested that i needed windows xp server desktop or something like that. I will do all my work on the live site except for module developement from now on.

Hey Webmonkey,
Are you trying to restore the database BAK to your hosting account at PowerDNN or to your local desktop? I know that I've seen lots of times when people try to restore the BAKs to their local computer, they don't change the internal paths in the BAKs (it isn't completely obvious) and then SQL Server won't let you restore it because of that.

The application was built by me but uses ListX from Bi4ce for about $70 as I recall. It handles all of the "Ajax magic" that makes the the results module update as you tick the boxes in the search module. It has a steep learning curve but is a great module. The manual is very complete and accurate at describing what each function does (much like a dictionary describes each word). However, there is little guidance on stringing these function together to get a good application. Hence the steep learning curve.
If you need to print content and don't like DNN's crazy print function look at the "print page icon and what it does. This comes from another idea from Kevin S. of Bi4ce (the guy who did the procedure for fixing the image paths when moving sites between localhost and productions site) This uses a simple bit of JavaScript and allows you to specify the divs that you want printed.

PowerDNN has always been very good to my company. We started out with a VPS account in Feb. 2006. This is an incredibly good setup (and no, I don't have stock in the company, nor am I affiliated). By now this offer has been discontinued, so now you can choose between dedicated or shared.
Because of several different reasons we went to the shared option (for now), and I found that the downgrade went without a hitch. The operator found that we had a somewhat different set up (with production and staging setups, without going through the control panel) and he did what needed to be done to get the whole thing set up on the shared account.
Tony (the owner) and all the staff are always very friendly, patient and extremely tolerant. I am a developer and support pro myself in my day job, and I am not half as patient as these very professional people.
I have only kudos for this company. Very knowledgeable with regards to hosting and DNN. No questions asked when I needed to downgrade. Very professional jon to get the original server setup and now the shared account. They will be my only choice when we go back to dedicated.
As you will probably ask: why go shared. Current economics. Plain and simple. Their shared account will support our current client base.

PowerDNN is the daddy. My site is almost as fast as when it was on a local host installation. Even the first load time (when the site hasnt been pinged in ages) is below 10 seconds.
Expensive though! |

Has anyone else had any problems with these lately?
I have been using them for a few months but just recently we have had lots of problems. It seems to be since they changed their support and want to start charging for it. If you dont pay for it, I am finding that you dont even get a reply.
I wont go into all the details as I would like to give them a chance to correct it first.
To cut the story short they deleted my account and wiped out my whole site. It took 4 days from my initial support request to put this right. i was told it was a bug in their software. This was just one problem I have had with them. They have left me feeling like they dont know what they are doing!
Is this just me? Or have they gone down hill? I went with them because of everything said about them in this forum.
I have also just found out that even though I paid $1000 for aspdnsf from powerdnn, they can not support it and neither will aspdnsf themselves as I bought it through a reseller.
They have been a very expensive mistake for us! |

I have been with PowerDNN for about a year now. No performance degradation issues.
They do seem to go down frequently in the dark of the night for upgrades, and my pager goes off or I wouldn't know about it. Daytime uptime has been great. My customers are all in the US. This wouldbe be great of they were in China.
Parellels Software has screwed my sight once recently by changing the protections. A bug know by PowerDNN staff. They fixed it quickly when I told them of the problem.
I haven't had any issues with the "new support" plans, but I haven't had any major issues either.
My biggest complaint is that when they close a call, they don't usually tell you what the problem was or how they fixed. This means that i have to reopen the call and ask.
I hope that your problems are a one of the kind.

I have spoken with Tony Valenti today. He seems like a nice man and has assured me that he will look into my issues. I will wait to hear the outcome and post back here when I do.
I agree with DavidWSnow that it is not really acceptable to close a call and not give you an answer. I have had a couple of problems where they have not been fixed and it has been closed without an explanation. I have been told that this is possibly because I raised the support call by email rather than their website so hopefully this wont happen again.
Hopefully, I am just a one off and they will sort out my issues. I will continue to use powerDNN for our current project if I see some improvement as I do think that the performance of their servers is far better than some other hosts we are using for smaller projects.
I do agree that they are expensive compared to some others but with good support when things go wrong, especially when the problems are caused by powerdnn, then I would be happy to pay for it.
