I spent a part of this last weekend with the tutorial “Search Engine Optimisation” by Brad Callen, available through Lee Sykes and DNN-Creative.

Brad talks a lot about linking as a boost to web page ranking. Is this still valid – or have Google again come up with changes and new rules for the game?

On Page 17 Brad illustrate an empty table cell to guide the Search Engine to the main Content pane instead of our menu. Would this trick work with an empty module only, or does it have to be a structure in the Skin itself?

Thanks people

Hello,

Yes the guide by Brad Callen is really useful for search engine optimisation and linking is still an element for the potential of your search engine results. But, remember it is just one element of search engine optimisation. If you are going to search for links make sure that you get good quality links, it's better to have a few quality links from high PR sites rather than a large number of links from low PR sites. -  Links naturally happen if you have a good website that is a useful resource for your visitors.

When I create a skin design, I try to place the main content as high in the source code as possible to help the search engines index the correct content, this is the main aim of optimising your source code for the search engines. This is much easier to do when working with pure CSS skins, when working with tables you may be able to implement the methods outlined in this article:
Table tricks for search engine optimized skins
