I need some user advice on uploading PDF and word documents onto a DNN site via the content manager.

As with the image gallery it is possible to browse to a folder on your computer and upload an image and place it in a container. I tried to do something similar to create a link to a PDF that I could upload to "a file on your site" but I can not browse to pick up the file and upload it.

The only thing I can do is FTP the files into a folder on the site and link to them from there but I would much rather do it the other way.

So can anyone shed some light?

Check to see if you have permission to upload. Admins and Hosts should have those permissions.

Thanks Joe, As it happens we checked the permissions and unfortunately are still unable to upload PDFs from the back end.

Is it only pdf files that you can't upload, or is it files in general?

I should be more specific. I try to create a link to a PDF/word document through the link gallery via 'file on your site' but there is only the root folder that contains images. I need to find out how we can upload PDFs into the root folder (or a folder in the root).  Is FTP the only way to get those files in there?

You might also want to look in the Portal's root directory and not the site's root directory.  The portal's root is Portals/X where X is the number associated with the portal.  The first portal is 0, the next is 1, etc.

You can upload files using the File Manager.  Note that the Host's file manager and the Site's file manager don't point at the same physical directory.  I suggest that you use the Site's file manager, and also create directories into which you'll place images.  It's a better organizational structure.  You'll also see that you can create "directories" and store images in the database, too.
