I have found NavXP by avatar-soft.ro to be a useful menu. It can be used either as a skin object or as a module, and it is VERY flexible.

Try Ventrian's Child Links module.

I used Ventrian's very easy module to use and you have the ablity to customize it with HTML and CSS.
