I dont think I  am really qualified to explain this but here goes.

Dnn is an application that allows you to create multiple portals within one "shell".  This allows you to share css files and modules between parent and child portals.   There is additiona sharing, very limited sharing , capabilites of sharing between child portals to its parent ( I have yet to verify how well it does this).

You need to download the starter kit, and some templates will be created. You can use either Visual Web Developer or Visual Studio 2005. There are a ton of documents that come with DotNetNuk that will at least get you started to understand how to build your own modules.

DotNetNuke and .NET web parts, web services, modules and code snippets.
