I was able to figure out that if I want to backup the database, I will need to, within MS SQL Server Management Studio Express, right click on the "Databases" item, select "Attach" and then click "Add", navigate to the actual Database.mdf file, select it and then should be able to perform a Backup.

The problem is that SQL Server throws an error when I try to attach the Database.  I do not have my browser open (it's been closed for 2 hours now), so I should be able to select it to perform the backup, but I can't.  Any ideas why I am unable to backup this database?

Thanks for any replies!

Hello,

Did you fix this? Instead of waiting, I just restarted my computer and did not load up the dnn installation, this gave me instant access to the database without problems.

Hope this helps,

Thanks,

Lee

I apologize for not responding earlier. I had a death in the family and then work got backed up.

I did get this fixed....somewhat. What I needed to do was stop my IIS Web Service from running, go into SQL Manager, Attach the database and then make a Backup. Only then could I restart the IIS Web Publishing Service. Which kinda stinks because I've been told that if I have full blown SQL 2005, I'd be able to attach, backup and restore, all without having to stop the IIS Service. I'm going to have to see if I can get enough funds budgeted to afford SQL 2005. I wonder if this means I'll have to start all over again with my DNN if I do upgvrade to SQL 2005, instead of the SQL Express? Any thoughts?

Thank you for your patience and again, I apologize for not replying earlier.

You won't need to start over. You should be able to move a database from SQL Server Express to SQL Server.

Also, if SQL server is just for your personal use, you can get a developers version, which is really cheap, something like £40 - I think I got my copy from Amazon.

Thanks guys. This isn't for personal use, it's for our Parks and Recreation department. I think I'll explore the least expensive option in SQL. Having this much strange behavior in SQL Express makes me leery.

Thanks again....btw Lee, have you done any videos showing how to properly setup the Forums module in a website yet? I have to tell you, I've used so many of the videos here to set my site up, it's just not funny, but it's taught me a lot!

Hello,

I haven't created a forums tutorial yet, but it is on the list. Glad to hear the tutorials are of use!

Cheers,
