Otherwise I am locked out of the application. Any suggestions?

The first time I tried to do the upgrade, the database update was said to be successful and put me right back to the screen to update the database. It was a continuous loop. The version number in the database never did update.

Do you know which password format your installation is using?

The previous default was encrypted, the current default is hashed.

It may be that the password format somehow changed in web.config, but I don't know how that could have happened in a normal upgrade. Or if the MachineKey changed.
