Keeping foreign characters in type

I have a site that has some words with special characters like -- é, ö and the German umlat. The words are generated when I upload a csv file and when I do that, the characters go away and are replaced. Is there any way to keep those characters so that after they are uploaded they are readable to the site visitor like they should be?

The easiest way to do that is by changing those characters to special codes. You can look here -- http://www.utexas.edu/learn/html/spchar.html -- for a table of characters and their HTML encoding. For example if one of the characters was &, you would put & in the text.
