Hi Guys,

I'm thinking on building an intranet based on DNN. But this is the first time I install DNN locally, I have a server hosted by an outside company so I have no idea how should I proper do my installation.

What type of database should I use?
Should I install the sql server in the same machine as the DNN? or should I put it on a separate machine?
What security measure should think  before implementing my DNN intranet?

Thank you.

DNN is a proper tool for building an intranet site.

You can use either SQL Server of SQL Server Express. For most cases, cost is likely to determine your choice.

Likewise, having your SQL Server on a separate machine is advantageous if you need the performance.

Thank you Joseph for your quick reply. Are there any security risk I should account for in an intranet?

Hi,

I am looking into using DNN for an intranet page with a business of about 35 people. We are hoping to have an announcements page where anyone can post as well as a calendar. We have a few committees such as the wellness committee that are interested in having their own pages. Cost is the main issue.

Do you have any advice as far as modules and setup? Also, what do you think the costs would be to set up something like I described?

Be sure to take a look at the series of tutorials that began this week on using DotNetNuke to build a website.  There's nothing in the tutorials that is counter to the notion of creating an intranet.

You can do all of this with DotNetNuke and included "core" modules, at not cost for software.  You may find it useful to spend a few dollars for some upgraded modules, but I wouln't suggest that at the beginning.  With the HTML, Announcements, Blog, and Forum modules you will be well served.

You will need to have a server that includes ASP.NET, IIS and a version of SQL Server.  The (free) SQL Server Express version ought to work just fine.

You main cost will be for the person or people who build the site.  If you are a newcomer to DotNetNuke, you will have a (relatively small) learning curve.  Add some more time (or money) if you want to have a custom or semi-custom skin.  There are some nice free ones available, too.

Ask your questions here as you go along.  We'll do our best to help.
