Hi all, I've recently moved my localhost site to our production server which is at a new ISP running Windows Server 2008 and IIS7.5 (all new to me and possibly the reason I cannot get this sorted out) I've now managed to move all the files over but when I try and run the site, I get the following error message: DotNetNuke Error An error has occurred. An error has occurred. (This error and and "An object of an instance" are my favourite kinds of errors!) Anyways, here's the screenshot that goes along with this and I hope that someone might have an answer for me on this. Thanks, James

Make sure that you've got the connection strings set correctly as a start.

Hi Joe,

I have compared it to another installation we have running correctly and it seems to be fine.

connectionStrings>

add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=_Dnn_551_TheCatalog;User ID=theusername;Password=theuserpassword" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=_Dnn_551_TheCatalog;User ID=theusername;Password=theuserpassword" />
...

Let me know if this looks ok to you? I've had to remove the open bracket because this forums editor is a bit limited and does not like it when I paste html code in it

Thanks

Found the error in the dbo.EventLog table of the database. Turns out I was missing a Skin file.

Did this leave your installation without any skin files?

I am getting this message on all pages of the site. I just tried installing one of the packaged modules - I believe the media one. Now all pages are blocked out. Any ideas how to get back to them? By the way... I am pretty new to DNN!

It is in a preview mode on Godaddy.com. We are trying to prepare to move the domain name over to go live, but then this...

One can also get this error on a new portal creation. I had 2 working portals, then added a third. On the 3rd I was getting the error message when trying to access it. Turns out the issue was that DNN needs Dark Knight skin for a new portal creation. I had removed it since I was no longer using it. Plus DNN ignores the default host skins on creation. I had set the default for host to one of my skins. Once I returned the Dark Knight to the skins folder all was fine.

My problem is that I now can't access the site at ask. Not even the admin stuff.

Do you have a backup of the site? If so, it's probably a good time to reinstall that.

If not, you will need to use something like SQL Server Management Studio to examine your database (if not that, GoDaddy probably has a similar tool). Look in the EventLog table, sort by date and find the current error message. Look in the LogProperties column for the full text of the error.

Sometimes you can fix things like this if you go into the directory and delete the offending module's directory from Desktop Modules directory. I'd make a good backup of the installation directory and database before starting to do something like that, though.

I appreciate your assistance. I had not gotten to the point of a back up (but I will now!). I am not what you would call a SQL guy. I searched the directory for the most recent and I ultimately ended up deleting the files for the new module in the Desktop Modules directory and a dll file in another folder for the module. It appears to be fine now. Hoping for the best! Thanks, again.

I am having the same situation but I have not added any modules. Local host is working fine but when I copy all files to production I get the following line in my EventLog table:

The error message refers to problems loading your skin.

I would double check that all files were copied properly and that file permissions are correct. Also, make sure that both connection strings were updated correctly in web.config.

Besides that error, does the site seem to work correctly?

I had the same situationa and it was all related to missing files. I suggest to do a compare of the folders. It helped me to figure out what folders did not move properly and I resolved the issues.

Login as Host and go to the Admin, Event Viewer page. You should be able to see more details about the error. Please post that here.

FWIW, I see the same error in IE10. That is good because the error is generated by DNN, not in the browser.

Make sure that the hosted site meets the minimum requirements for DNN.

To move the site correctly, you must also move the database and the web directory. The database must include an alias for the hosted website. The web.config file must be edited to connect to the hosted database.

Are you hosted with a company that provides support for DNN. If so, they should be able to help you. If not, you're going to have to figure this out yourself. I assume that you do have access to the web directory (FTP?) and to the database (MS SQL Management Studio).

I have just encountered the same problem with the same repeating message. I have no access except via FTP and SQL server admin.
I have attached the latest SQL eventlog entry in a txt file, which I cannot make any sense out of. If anyone can help, please! GoDaddy support has so far not been helpful.
Thanks!

First, tell me how you moved the site from local to production?

This error actually looks like it may have something to do with IIS and/or ASP.NET. Which version of ASP.NET did you use in localhost? Which is configured in the production site?

Joseph,
If you are replying to my post, my site has been up for over a year, and has not had any module additions or changes for quite some time. THis error just occurred out of the blue.
I will add that I attempted to upgrade the DNN install using GoDaddy's scripts (several months ago), but they crashed, then their roll-back crashed. They agreed to restore from backup; result? The DNN site functioned, but some tools like document management no longer would successfully upload documents or images, or recognize those that I manually FTP'd to the site. Again GoDaddy does not seem to have much DNN expertise.
I don't know if that has anything to this current issue.

Sorry, I was confused by the title of the thread.

I will try to slog my way through the error message that you posted again, and with more awake eyes than this morning.

I do understand that Godaddy is attractive for web hosting due to cost. But, there are other choices. In particular, PowerDNN and AppliedI offer reasonably priced hosting with technical support prowess that greatly exceeds the economical cost. In other words, spend a few dollars more and you can get reliable hosting with quite good tech support.

Joseph,
I could not agree more, and yearn to move the site to another host. I have been considering 3essentials, who I have some limited, but positive experience with. As this is a client's site, the decision is up to them (believe me with my urging to move). Meanwhile, if you can help me figure out how to parse and decipher the eventlog message, I would be grateful.

Also, do you know which version of ASP.NET is being used by your IIS?

Wihch version of DNN are you using?

Did you make any changes before this started to happen? What were they?

Is it possible to get a copy of the site? (Database backup and file directory backup)

Joseph,
Eventlog says DNN version 6.1.5
ASP.NET:
The GoDaddy control panel says "ASP.NET 2.0/3.0/3.5"
I see a reference in the eventlog to asp.net v2.0.50727
IIS v7

No changes were made just prior to the start of this error condition.
Last changes to site was 8/27, and this was simply to add a link on an HTML page.

I still have access to the site via FTP, so can copy all site files, i'm sure I can also get a copy of the site SQL DB. I intend to do this once I find a new host and get the OK from the owners of the site. I would still like to have this site working in the meanwhile.

Do you have any suggestions on how to parse the eventlog entries? It appears to be several messages strung together in one long string. Ugh.

The best recommendation is to get a copy of the site (directory and database), install them on a local computer, and see if you can get it to run there.

If that's not something you are comfortable doing, write to me privately and I can put you in touch with experienced folks who can help you with it. Use the Contact form at patapscorg.com.

As for parsing the event log, you can put it into a text editor and manually insert line breaks to make it more readable. The important part seems to be the part about ambigous (dual copies) of some files.

I'll go back to the notion that GoDaddy's tech support should be able to deal with this. It looks like some sort of IIS or related configuration issue.

Thanks Joseph, I've completed the contact form.
I'll have another go at GoDaddy support and see if I can guilt them into providing some actual support. The dual locations for files may be a good lead, there is not any way I could have done that as that is on the server side that I do not have access to.
I already had copied the eventlog into a text editor, I just have no idea where one message ends and another begins.

Dear Joseph,

I am facing problem here with my ortal hosted at godaddy.com. The last change I made was a little modification in the Search.ascx file in admin skins. I have reverted the changes and uploaded the old file again but still nothing changed as I cant even access any of my portal pages. I have checked the even log and it says The name 'SeeMoreText' does not exist in the current context.
Is there any file I have to delete in order the system to start recompiling as currently it seems that it is constantly shwoing the error page without even looking into the portal,,
url is:

Do you recognize the name "SeeMoreText"?

Can you show more of the details of the message, like the stack trace?

Without knowing more, I'd guess that the change you made to Search.ascx is the problem.

Did you make any skin and/or container changes.

Can you recycle the Application Pool for the site? And, if possible, clear the cache.

Check the file search.ascx and see if the text 'SeeMoreText' appears anywhere in the file, particularly around line 7.

If might make sense to get a copy of that file from an Install version of DNN and use that to replace yours.
