I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I would like the registration process to require the user to select from 1 of 2 roles when registering on my event website(an exhibitor versus an attendee). Exhibitor role will ahve access to different content than attendees. Plus I need to differentiate between the two for obvious reasons.

This is for event registration and not for site registration, correct?

Which module are you using for registration?

I am actually using the standard site regsitration module. I was hoping it had some built in flexibility where I can differentiate the type of user based on a drop down list at the time of registration., thus giving specific permission to the roles they signed up for. (Attendee versus Exhibitor). Ex: Register for site and select attendee, therefore automatically register with securiry role set up for attendee.

If you need to assign a security role based on a registration selection, that is not part of the built-in functionality.

You might be able to get around this by using an RSVP code.  Look here for details.

Thanks for this. Interesting but may be too confusing for users and admins, however, your suggestion had me look outside the box a bit. I am considering using the new forms and lists module to collect information and have the user submit details including the selection of attendee versus exhibitor. My only fear here is that they will confuse registering for the portal with the submission of details via forms. Can I remove teh registration module from the skin and only display the login module?

Yes.  The easiest way to remove the Register link is by setting Registration to None in Site Settings.  The Register link won't appear, but the User will appear when logged in.

That worked perfectly and I simply used the forms and list module to collect attendee information.
