What settings do i need to alter to make the dnn website open faster. I am pinging it from remote to keep it alive but is there any other techniques that can be used to increase the speed.

First, you want to configure DotNetNuke itself for best performance.  There is a discussion and some links here.

I'd also recommend Mitchel Seller's blog for a discussion of improving performance and also with keeping the site alive.
