    Hello,

I am just starting out with DNN and have installed it on my local machine alongwith VWD Express 2008 and MS SQL 2008.

Previously I have been able to create a new website and view the localhost version by right clicking on the main directory folder and selecting View In Browser.

However, when following the Issue 5 & 6 tutorials I am asked to create a new folder and add a Skin and Container folder within this one.  All htm, xml and css files are then added to these folders.

In video 3 I have to upload the new skin to my local website and view when.  The problem is that trying the above mentioned method I am unable to view the localhost website as I get a page titled Directory listing.  I am assuming this is because the file structure is not based on DNN but the tutorial did not give any mention of setting it any specific way (from what I can see).

Please can someone advise where I have gone wrong.

    Many thanks,

    Trevor

This might be a permissions issue, or it might be that Default.aspx is not listed as a document for the web site.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am assuming this is caused by the default.aspx file not being in the folder with the skin files mentioned previously.

The video shows me how to set up the folder for skinning but I did notice that this is the only set of folders showing, unlike the many files and folders visiable when creating a new website and associating it to the DotNetNuke application.

    Any suggestions?

    Trev

No, the Default.aspx file should NOT be in the skins folder.

Can you review how you have things set up?

    Hi,

    Following the video tutorials from issues 5 & 6 I have the following files available within VWD's Solution Explorer window;

Vortex folder containing two sub-folders, 'Container' and 'Skin'

Container has the following files within it - container.css, container.xml, two image header.htm files and 1 transparent.htm file
Skin has the following files within it - 1 Pane Fixed Width.htm, skin.css and skin.xml

    Hope this information helps,

    Trevor

    hello,

With the method of skinning outlined in issues 5&6 we are creating a skin folder completely outside of the DotNetNuke installation files. You need to install the skin to your DotNetNuke portal in order to view the skin in your localhost installation.

If you wish to edit skin files directly within your DotNetNuke installation files, we have recently covered the ascx method of skinning which outlines that method:
DotNetNuke ASCX Skinning for Professional Skinners

however, that tutorial assumes that you have a working knowledge of skinning and that you have viewed some of the earlier skinning tutorials, so I would encourage you to work through issues five and six and then have a look at the tutorial above.

You may want to re-watch this tutorial: Setup Preparations for Skinning from issues 5 & 6

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Lee,

    Thanks for your response.

I have already re-watched the videos and realised where I was going wrong.  Now fully on my way to creating my first skin

    Cheers,
