    Hi

I'm went through your videos from issue 31 on installing dnn 4.8.4 to vista. I've completed 1-3 fine. In 4 I was unable to load up my site using IE http://localhost/dnn_484_test. I get this error:

vbc : error BC30138: Unable to create temp file in path 'C:\Windows\TEMP\': System Error &H80070005&

There is an existing c:\windows\temp folder so I don't know why it's attempting to create it. If I rename the folder to something else and re-attempt I get the same error.

I ran VS2005 and opened the website dnn_484_test and ran it following the directions in video 4. It failed with a script error while building the database. I re-ran it selecting the 'Auto' option rather than the 'typical' option and everything went fine. The database got built and the DNN portal came up fine. However, I still can't run it if I start it from IE. I get the same error (as above).

    Any ideas?

    TIA

The message is that it's unable to create a file in the temp directory. You might want to revisit the parts of the tutorial about file permissions.

    Joe

Thanks for your response. I checked the video again and all the permissions appear to be ok.

I thought I may have erred when I installed IIS, so I uninstalled and re-installed it. Then when I tested IIS by invoking it via IE, I did not get the information message cautioning that intranet settings were not enabled.

Other than that, everything went as described in the videos (establishing mapping to website folder and allowing Network Services fulll access to folder).

I still get that failure when atttepting to access the website via IE.

    Any ideas?

    TIA

Have you managed to solve this problem?

Out of interest, have you tried installing DotNetNuke using the Firefox browser? - if this goes through without causing errors you then know it's a problem with IE7.

    Hi Lee

Thank you for your interest in helping me with this error. No I have not been able to resolve this error yet.
I get the same error with both IE and firefox. I'm really at a loss, since I'm a newbie in both DNN and IIS. Any suggestions
to reslove this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    can you navigate to

    http://localhost/ without problems?

I have attached an app_offline.htm file in a zip file - place this htm file in the root of your DNN installation files, if you now navigate to your DNN install, does it display the app_offline file?

I like to do this in a couple of stages.

    • Start with an empty web directory and put in an index.htm file.  If you browse to your site and this file is displayed, then IIS is probably set up right.  The file can have contents as simple as "hello".
    • Rename index.htm to app_offline.htm.  Then try again.  Success here indicates that asp.net if probably ok.
    • copy in the DotNetNuke installation leaving the app_offline.htm file in place.  Browse again.  If this is ok, I think that means that web.config is ok.
    • remove app_offline.htm.  If there are now failures, then there is something wrong with the DotNetNuke installation.

    Hi Lee, Craig

To answer Lee's question, yes, I can successfully invoke http://localhost from IE 7 or Firefox (screenshot)

I created a new folder called DNN_Test, copied Lee's app_offline.htm to it and renamed it index.htm. Next I told IIS where it was
located (per video 3). Then set up the folder permissions giving Network Service full control to the DNN_Test folder. I ran firefox
(works equally well with IE 7) and set the url to http://localhost/DNN_Test and it displayed the contents of index.htm (Screen shots).

I changed it's name from index.htm to app_offline.htm, and tried to access it from firefox by setting url to
http://localhost/DNN_Test ... it failed with HTTP Error 403.14 (screen shots)

ok, just tested this to double check - the app_offline file will only work when you have placed your DNN installation files in the DNN_Test folder as well.

Copy all DNN installation files into the folder, leave in there app_offline.htm

    then navigate to http://localhost/dnn_test

When you setup IIS - make sure you 'add application' and do not use the DefaultAppPool, Select Classic .Net AppPool

    Hi Lee

Thanks for your response. I tried many things to get this working over the weekend but was unsuccessful.

I was not successful with your latest suggestion either. I then renamed app_offline.htm to index.htm and lo! I
unexpectedly I got the install screen where you have to identify the install type: custom, typical or auto.
I was then able to contiune to continue the installation successfully to completion. Why it started to suddenly work is a mystery.

In an effort to understand why this worked I created several folders dnn_test2, dnn_test3, etc and followed the  steps outlined in videos from issue #31 and all completed with a working dnn installation.  If anyone runs into this type of
probelm my suggestion would be to:
    1. reboot system
    2. create new folder
    3. copy dnn install files to folder (you might want to do this via the command prompt and and request copy verification)
    4. proceed as described in videos from issue #31

Thanks for your help Lee, Craig.

    Hello,

Glad to hear you got it sorted, something else to perhaps think about in the future is installing DotNetNuke to a virtual PC, I find that doing this eliminates potential problems with your current installation of Windows as you setup a fresh install in virtual PC and configure it just for DNN, and it also keeps your DotNetNuke installations completely separate and movable to different computers:

for those who might have same problems and are not lucky like garry

    it is so simple
the error is on windows temp files
so go to C: >> windows

    Right klick on it

    choose Share option

in new windows click on security and click on network services and allow the full permision

    voila the problem is resolved
