Issue 59 - DotNetNuke Telerik RAD Editor, Introduction and Customization

Welcome to Issue 59 of DNN Creative Magazine

In this issue we demonstrate how to use and fully customize the new Telerik RAD Editor available in DotNetNuke 5.

The Telerik RAD Editor now replaces the FCK Editor as the default HTML and text editor in DotNetNuke 5. We walk you through its large feature set and show you how to fully customize the editor to suit your own needs.

We show you how to change important settings such as how to instruct the editor to use paragraph tags when you press the enter key rather than break tags. We walk you through how to disable and remove certain buttons and how to use CSS styles for easily styling the text and images in the Telerik RAD Editor.

Next we show you how to change the default text editor that is used in DotNetNuke. This allows you to easily switch to using the FCK Editor or the Telerik RAD Editor, so you can easily choose your favourite text editor in DotNetNuke.

Following this we continue the Open Web Studio tutorials, this month we demonstrate how to implement the vast features of the jQuery User Interface library into your Open Web Studio applications, and we show you how to insert a date picker, auto complete input boxes and a tab system.

To finish, we continue the series of articles on DotNetMushroom Rapid Application Developer (RAD), where we demonstrate how to create charts and display them within your DotNetNuke portals.

Super Stylesheets are ideal for both beginner and experienced skin designers, they provide skin layouts using CSS. The advantage of Super Stylesheets is that you can easily create a skin layout which works in all browsers without the need to learn complex CSS techniques.

They are also very quick to build and you can change a skin layout in a matter of minutes rather than hours. This makes the installation process much more streamlined and less prone to user error. In the tutorial we walk you through all of the steps required for creating skin packages along with tips, pitfalls to avoid and the various ways in which you can configure a DotNetNuke 5 skin package.

Following this we have an advanced tutorial which explores methods to combat spam in your website. In particular we focus on Active Forums and show you how to create scheduled SQL queries to prevent spam displaying in your forum. Spam can be a time consuming nuisance to both the administrators and the visitors of your website, so this tutorial helps you to automate the prevention of spam.

Next we are continuing with the Open Web Studio tutorials. Last month we completed the six part series on 'How to Build a Public Knowledge Base Module with OWS'. In this issue we continue the ASCX method of skinning from the previous issue and now delve into the DotNetNuke NavMenu.

The NavMenu is the default menu that comes with DotNetNuke and is available in DotNetNuke versions 4 and 5. We demonstrate how to configure and setup the NavMenu in your DotNetNuke skins, how to create a horizontal menu, vertical menu and both a horizontal and vertical menu on the same page.

Throughout the tutorial we show you the various attributes that are available for configuring the menu as well as CSS code for styling the design of the menu.

In this tutorial we demonstrate the DotNetNuke NavMenu. The NavMenu is the default menu that comes with DotNetNuke, we demonstrate how to configure and setup the NavMenu in your DotNetNuke skins and how to create a horizontal menu, vertical menu and both a horizontal and vertical menu on the same page.

To begin the tutorial we demonstrate how to create a basic 1pane simple skin and add the NavMenu to your skin. The first menu we create is a horizontal menu, we show you how to add a background faded image to the menu, how to set the styling for hover over, the breadcrumb trail styling for the menu, (ie. the currently selected page) and how to work with the various attributes that are available for the NavMenu.

FCK Editor custom toolbars and security roles are then explained, which will allow you to customize which toolbar buttons are available for use in the FCK Editor, as well as which security roles have access to the toolbar sets. The final tutorial for the FCK Editor covers further configuration options and demonstrates the key areas for adjusting the advanced settings within the FCK Editor.

Keeping within the theme of ensuring content administrators use good practices when adding content to a DotNetNuke portal, we also introduce the concept of alert styles. Alert styles inform the administrator of any bad practices they have used by highlighting the bad practice text with a red box. This can really help to minimise bad practices and keep control of the content added to your DotNetNuke portals.

Following on from our special SQL issue last month, we are dedicating another full issue to improving the efficiency of your administration time with DotNetNuke using SQL queries.

The SQL methods we show you this month are very powerful techniques which will reduce weeks of work into seconds. These tutorials are especially useful if you are re-skinning a large DotNetNuke installation.

To begin with we demonstrate how to update the Page Settings of a page using SQL queries.

We then demonstrate how to use SQL queries to delete a group of modules from a page, move modules between content panes and insert a copy of a module to a page. If you were to manually move, delete and insert modules when re-skinning your DotNetNuke installation it could take up to 10 minutes per page, for a 500 page website this would take 5000 minutes. Using SQL queries will allow you to apply changes across your entire site within seconds.

Following this we take a look at the DotNetNuke SQL Module. This module comes free with DotNetNuke and is only available to the host user on your DotNetNuke installation. This module allows you to execute SQL queries without the need for SQL Server Express. Although we thoroughly recommend you use SQL Server Express to build and check your queries, this module is very useful if you already have a good understanding of SQL queries.

And finally, we demonstrate how to work with Skins and Containers in DotNetNuke using SQL queries. In the previous tutorials we demonstrated how to change a container on a single page, in this tutorial we show you how to change the container for a copied module that is displayed on all or several pages, how to change the container of a module to a new container based on the name of the old container, and how to change the skin of a page to a new skin based on the name of the old skin.

As you can see, using all of the techniques outlined in this issue will literally save you weeks of work.

Interview at the DotNetNuke OpenForce 07 conference in Las Vegas. At the end of one of the presentations people were hanging about so I went over to Malik, Tracy and Alex who were sat on the floor to get a background about them and how they use DotNetNuke. At this point I finished the interview as I just wanted to get an introduction to some of the business community in DotNetNuke. Of course we then carried on the conversation and it turned into Tracy interviewing myself about CSS skinning, so I started recording again as I thought it would be interesting to have a listen to, Brad then came over and we also covered other elements such as localization and OpenForce. This was the good thing about OpenForce, lots of conversations hearing how people are implementing DotNetNuke for their own businesses.

In this video tutorial we demonstrate how to backup a live hosted DotNetNuke website and install it on a localhost computer.

This enables you to test elements such as new modules and new skins before installing them on your live website and allows you to keep a backup copy of your website on your own personal computer.

This is an important technique to learn as it can prevent installation issues occurring with the live website. For instance, when upgrading DotNetNuke you can download the live site to a localhost computer and run the upgrade process on the localhost installation to check that no errors occur before applying it to the live website.

In this video tutorial we demonstrate how to transfer a localhost DotNetNuke installation to a live hosted website.

This covers how to transfer a localhost site which uses an SQL Server 2005 Express database to a hosting provider which uses an SQL Server 2005 database.

This method is much more reliable than the portal template and site wizard method for transferring data from a localhost installation to a live website as it does not suffer the same problems as the portal template method.

For example, this method transfers all data and modules, all registered users and security roles etc, the tab ids remain the same and it can easily transfer the data from a large site. The portal template method has problems with each of those elements.

Find and Replace SQL queries for DotNetNuke - 3 Videos

In this video tutorial we demonstrate using a Find and Replace SQL procedure to fix problems such as editing image urls after uploading a localhost installation to a live website.

This means that you can automatically adjust any html code within the text / html module across all of the pages in your DotNetNuke installation in a matter of seconds, rather than manually editing each page.

This method can also be used for editing words in the text / html module. For instance, suppose you wish to change your company name, you can apply these SQL techniques to search for the current company name and replace it with a new company name.

Other techniques can include searching for inline CSS code in the text/html module, such as font tags, and deleting all of the code so that all styling comes from the skin.css files.

The DNN Module Packager is a utility that creates a DotNetNuke manifest file and packages modules into a ZIP file for deployment to a DotNetNuke 3.x or DotNetNuke 4.x hosting site. You can edit the manifest file before packaging and also add any other files to the package that your module needs to function properly in a DotNetNuke environment. The DNN manifest file is simply an XML file that contains information about the Module, it's DNN-interface controls (like View, Edit, and Settings controls), and a listing of all the folders, files, and binaries needed by the module.

In particular, the aim was to build a DotNetNuke website which would allow an administrator with little or no experience of DotNetNuke to:

How many times have you wanted to use a font other than the generic fonts that we are forced to use for web pages?

The user does not need the font installed on their machine.

Some designers use the technique of using images for their headings just so that they can incorporate different fonts into their designs. Using header tags can increase accessibility, enabling for instance speech browsers to understand the content of your pages, as well as the added benefit of enabling search engines to easily index your content. Header tags allow search engines to identify the topic of your website page, which should improve your search results.

The overall theme here is to allow various browser types / search engines to easily understand and interpret the content within your website pages and to create semantic code.

This tutorial explains the various CSS files that are used within DotNetNuke and how inheritance works between each of the CSS files for styling your DotNetNuke skins.

Once you understand inheritance you can reduce the amount of code required to create a DNN skin and therefore decrease the load time of a page.

Contrary to popular knowledge, the SolPartMenu provides full capabilities for options including root menus, child menus, vertical displayed menus and more. Continuing our series on How to build a DotNetNuke website, we expand on the previous tutorial (Styling and formatting in the Text/HTML module) and add content to the Home and Portfolio pages of the Vortex Music website.
The first three videos of this tutorial focus on the Home page, in particular working with the Text/HTML module and the FCKEditor. We demonstrate the best practices when working with the Text/HTML module as well as working with images, uploading files and formatting the text.

The second half of the tutorial (6 videos) focuses on the portfolio page. We demonstrate how to programme the skin.css file and the FCKEditor so that you can quickly and easily create the Portfolio credits list. This page is created using just CSS, no tables are used and no images or formatting are placed in the source code of the page. The Portfolio page is styled completely using the skin.css file.

This is an interesting website because it uses CSS for the layout of the website, rather than tables. At present, there are not many DotNetNuke websites that use CSS for the layout on commercial websites, so this is a particularly interesting website.

Even more interesting is that this site fully validates to the W3C standards. This is the first DNN site that I have come across that fully validates

How to adjust your Nameserver settings

Once you have bought your own domain name (ie. www.dnncreative.com) and your hosting package, you need to point your domain name from your domain registrar to your hosting providers’ servers in order to access your web page.

It's important that you do this as soon as possible as it can take 24 to 48 hours for the new settings to take effect across the internet.

In this tutorial we have purchased our domain name using 1&1.com and we are going to point the domain to the serverintellect.com servers.

Note: each domain registrar will adjust the nameserver settings in a slightly different way, but the basic principles that are demonstrated here will apply for all domain registrars.

Firefox Live Bookmarks in DotNetNuke

Some RSS aggregators have the capability of finding an RSS feed on a web page and making it easy for the user to subscribe to it

An example of this can be seen in the Firefox browser, whenever the browser discovers an RSS feed, it displays an orange icon in the bottom right of the browser window.

If you click on the orange Firefox icon it will give you the option to subscribe to the RSS feed.

This tutorial can be applied to any flash file that you wish to incorporate into your pages, not just flash games.

There are two options available. You can either purchase a module which will automatically play flash files for you, which you can easily configure, or using a small amount of code, you can embed any flash file you require for free.

We demonstrate how to use the free method.

The tutorial does not change any of the core code in DotNetNuke and you do not need to understand flash programming to follow this tutorial. All you need is a basic understanding of how DotNetNuke works, eg. How to add a module to a page, etc.
