DotNetNuke 5 and HouseMenu 1.4

Hello,

I noticed a few users having problems with their skins in DNN5.x and HouseMenu, so I've done some testing and found these steps for solving the problem.

First of all, if you are having problems with a skin after upgrading, I would suggest you test out these steps on a fresh DNN5.x install to make sure you can get it to work before testing it on one of your own skins:

Download HouseMenu 1.4 Skin Object from www.houseofnuke.com
Download Andreas 01

First of all install HouseMenu

Go to:
Host / Module Definitions / Install Module
- Install HouseMenu 1.4 Skin Object

Once installed, you need to make a change to the Skin Object, go to:

Host Menu / Extensions
Scroll down to the Skin Objects and click on the 'Edit' pencil icon for HouseMenuSkinObject

You need to change the URL in ControlSrc to:

DesktopModules/housemenuskinobject/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx
(this will point DNN to the correct folder for the HouseMenu skin object - Make sure you copy the Capitalisation above)

Click on 'Update Extension' at the bottom of the page

Now you can install the skin, go to:

Host menu / Skins
click on Install New Skin
Browse to the andreas 01 skin zip package
Click Next

It will inform you that it is a legacy skin
Click on the 'Skin' radio button
Click Next
Click Next
Click Next
Tick Accept License, Click Next
The skin and container will install, Click on Return

Now create a new page for a test
Go to the page setting and apply the andreas01 skin and container

All should be working ok

If you have already installed the skin, you will need to re-parse it for the skin to use the correct link to the HouseMenu skin object, to do that, go to:
Host menu / Skins
Click 'Manage Skins'
Select 'Andreas01' from the skins dropdown list

Click on 'Parse Skin Package'

That should solve the problem.

Hi All,

I am trying to make my site faster faster fastest.
I have read so many different things (see references below) but I would like to review all the options and get your opinion on them.

1.
Site Tweaks

Keep Alive Tools
I have read so many different tools to do this, and I would like to know the best one.
a. PageBlaster from Snapsis - www.snapsis.com (module)
b. Keep Alive - http://www.montastic.com (Site monitor)
c. Keep Alive - http://www.dnn-modules.com/Default.aspx?tabid=84 (Module)
d. Keep Alive Forever - http://www.keepaliveforever.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx (Site Monitor)

I am currently running "c" Keep Alive, however it only makes the front end pages load fast, when I click "login" it takes a long time to load this simple login module, very frustrating.

I would like a Keep Alive that loads all the modules (including Core Functions) on a regular basis. I don't see how visiting site.com/keepalive.aspx does that, surely it needs to login and visit all the pages to keep them fresh and in memory.
Has anyone used PageBlaster from Snapsis, that one looks good.

3.
Hosting
According to http://www.keepaliveforever.com/ PowerDNN is the best DNN host around, with lightning fast speeds and systems tweaked to run DNN.
I am running on webhost4life which appears slow to me, but I am not sure as I am still developing so recompilation is happening at the moment fairly often, but it isn't far away from launch, so I am interested in maybe moving host for my production environment.

I appreciate your thoughts on these topics.

How Do I Place Adsense Code in Standard Page?

Hi all

I'm new here, not a coder and only new to DNN. I'm not sure we are adding the Adsense code into the page properly. We will only add it to certain pages (not across the whole web site). We have tried adding via html edit mode but it does not seem to 'take'. It certainly doesn't show up.

The page we have been testing on is: http://www.thewisetraveller.com/Articles/ID/3428/Women-Dominating-Travel

Some time ago someone told me I should use 'div' to place in scripts, but as I'm not a coder I'm not even close to sure where to begin with this.

Our original developer is no longer with us so have come here to see if someone can assist with this small bit.

Can't login - Accidentally deleted the Login page or Login link

Doh! You've been working hard on your skin, uploaded it and then realised you forgot to put the Login link on it!

How do you now login to your site?!

If you add ctl=login to the end of a querystring it forces a load of the login dialog eg.

www.mysite.com/default.aspx?ctl=login

DNN error with stack trace

Hi,

i need help with this problem, i moved my local website to live site over mywindowshosting.com
i uploaded all files, attached database and edited connection string which seems to be working because i tried it on my local instance and site worked fine, i tried to find answer what could be problem that im getting DNN error page but cant find solution

To edit the Privacy and Terms:

1) Go to: Host / Languages
2) Click on Language Editor
3) You will be presented with a list of templates you can edit
4) Scroll down, select
5) MESSAGE_PORTAL_PRIVACY.Text
6) MESSAGE_PORTAL_TERMS.Text
7) If you click on the arrow to the right hand side of the text box, it will open up the Text Editor so that you can make any alterations necessary.

I have just received an email newsletter from fastshosts in the UK informing about IE8, I wanted to make a note of this for future use, so I'm copying it into here for everyone to have a read:

Microsoft is currently preparing to release a new version of its Internet Explorer web browser. Version 8 is set to be released for all Windows users early in 2009, meaning that web masters may have some work to do now to ensure that their websites will display correctly in the new browser.

How IE8 affects your website
With IE8, Microsoft has enhanced how the web browser displays and renders websites. Previously, the company had been criticised for not complying with internet standards for HTML and CSS; the languages used to create websites. Within the latest version, however, the company claims to have massively improved web standards support, bringing Internet Explorer in line with web browsers such as Firefox, Opera, Safari and Google Chrome.

This brings a problem: your website may break in the new version of Internet Explorer.

(If you have coded your skins using CSS and XHTML compliant standards you should not experience problems)

Luckily though, there’s an easy fix that you can put into your HTML:

The easy fix
Somewhere between your < head >< / head > tags of every page on your website, insert the following snippet of XHTML:

This tells Internet Explorer 8 to build your website exactly how it did in IE7.

The advanced fix
For the most part, your website will only break if it doesn’t adhere to web standards. If you hand code your website, we always recommend developing your site using CSS and XHTML standards to ensure that your website is future proofed.

Error during login

Oh man I done it again. After going through all the procedures for enabling facebook authentication. I tried it and it appeared to work but I have it set up as needing approval so it emailed me. I went to log in as admin to approve and change this setting and the worst when you try to log in as admin or host it just blinks and say this in red below "A critical error has occurred. An unexpected error has occurred" It's DNN7 and I have complete access to the remote host machine but what can I try I'm lost.

before redirect, i did modification by : www.mypage.com/login.aspx
but now when i try the same, the page is redirect to the url I set.

Can't find the web.config file

Have you been hunting for the web.config file in the latest versions of DotNetNuke and been wondering where has it gone?

It's called release.config so that you don't accidentally overwrite your old web.config file if you are upgrading your installation of DotNetNuke.

Make sure you follow the instructions closely and copy across the appropriate elements from your old web.config file to the new release.config file if you are upgrading

Otherwise, simply rename the release.config file to web.config and there you go!

I moved my live app to my local machine as describe by Lee Sykes. Everything fine, except that because the images referenced in a txt box are relative (/Portals/images/....) they no longer work as the app files are now in a local subdirectory. (/sub/Portals/images/...). Is there a way to avoid editing all these references and display the picture relative to some defined directory?
(Same problem seems to be in Ultra Medium Gallery but I can't really tell)
