Well I recently purchased a store module to install on my DNN 4.4.1 portal. Today when I went to install it I logged in as administrator only to find the Host tab has completely dissapeered. I am at a loss as to how to get it back, and was hoping someone here may have some insight.

Thanks in advance,

-Nate

You need to stop and then restart IIS, or reboot your server. Something has gone awry ...

(This happened over the weekend to one of my websites, too.)

This may seem like a daft question but when you say you logged in as administrator - did you log in as host? - Only the host user can see the host menu, the admin user can only see the admin menu.

Yep that was the problem. I guess I misunderstood the function of the admin acct as I thought admin can see the host menu as well. This issue is fixed...

My admin tab is missing when I log in as admin. My host tab is missing when I log in as host. I installed my dnn site in a virtual directory under the website, and I don't know if that matters. Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem? Does anyone know what the problem is?

you should not have problems from installing in a virtual directory, do you see the admin menu when logged in as host? - is this a fresh installation on a localhost installation?  It could be worth attempting a re-install. - has this installation previously been working? it's odd that the menu items have just disappeared, if you can provide any further information we may be able to help.

Thanks,

Actually, the results were the same after my fourth reinstall.  However, I have isolated the problem after installing the web site on a different server, with no problems.

I have not narrowed down the issue yet, but it is either in the IIS headers that control caching and content expiration, or it is a result of inherited web.config settings from the parent folder.  The IIS root has content expiration set to immediate, and all HTTP headers removed.  The parent folder's web.config uses a different method of forms authentication than the DNN site.  I suspect the later because the admin and host menu tabs only appear after a successful login, so the login must not have been successful.

I isolated the problem to some settings inheritance from the root web application's web.config.

I had to override two web.config settings sections in the dnn root directory to get the DNN login working correctly. I overrode the parent folder's < authorization > section:

< authorization >
  < deny users="?"/ >
< /authorization >

I also had to override a duplicate httpModule ScriptModule reference from the parent folder's web.config:

< add name="ScriptModule" type="System.Web.Handlers.ScriptModule, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" / >

The added entries in my working DNN site's web.config look like this:

< system.web >

  < httpmodules >
< !-- Be careful not to use the < clear / > tag here! That breaks the login process. -->
    < remove name="ScriptModule"/ >
  < /httpmodules >

  < authorization >
    < allow users="*,?"/ >
  < /authorization >

< /system.web >

Well, the XML didn't display correctly in the above post, so I posted the same response here:

Thanks for the info, if you wish to post code add a space after < and before > - you can do this quickly using notepad or a html editor, just press ctrl+h to find and replace and find < and replace with <(space), find > replace with (space)>

Hey guys, I hope someone is still able to give me some advice on this topic.  By the way, when answering assume you are talking to a complete idiot please.
I had my DNN installed by someone else, who at the time was managing it for me as well (adding modules, etc.).  He has since moved on and I am left to try and understand how all this works.  I was trying to upload a new module and in reading it talks about logging in as 'host'.  This is where I have a problem.

When I get to log in it does not give me a choice of Host or Admin.  At the top of my webpage is a key with the word login.  when I hit that it takes me a page with a username and password.  After entering that I get access to my page where I can alter text, add pictures and so on.  It also give me a pull down menu called Admin.  This allows me to do all the administrative stuff.

But there is nothing marked host.  Help please.

I can log on to Plesk control panel and manage my files from there, but that doesn't seem to help.

What can I do as I would really like to add some new features to my site.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

If this was set up in a standard way, you will have a username "host" and a username "admin."  If you login as host, you will see the host menu and the admin menu.  If you login as admin, you'll see only the admin menu.

It would seem that you logged in as admin.

The Plesk control panel won't help you here ...

Hmm, there is obviously a problem with my DNN install then as I only get presented with one choice of log in, which as I said, when it opens my page give me the admin activities.  I have just tried to reset the skin by going to 'restore default', but that has no effect.  Is there anyway to get teh host features back?
Would upgrading to a newer version of DNN overcome this?  And if so, then the next really dumb question is, how do I do that?

When you say that you are presented with only one choice, can you explain more?

Normally, you would see a login box where you can enter a username and password.  I assume that you are seeing something different.

Can I see the site?  Click my name to send an email if you don't want to put it in public.
