DNN version 4.8.3 running on Windows Server 2003 Version 5.2 R2

NETWORK SERVICE has Full Control permission

This error comes up intermittenly when re-uploading a file using File Manager.

An Error Has Occurred When Attempting To Save The File \Portals\0\banners\banner_rotator.js. Please Contact Your Hosting Provider To Ensure The Appropriate Security Settings Have Been Enabled On The Server.

Like I said, it's intermittent: sometimes it works, sometimes it throws an error.  Immediately after it works, I would try to re-upload again and I would get the error.  A few seconds later, I try again, it works. Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help.

banner_rotator.js is only 3KB.

This behavior was reported after we upgraded from 4.3.4 to 4.8.3.

Before the upgrade, we created 2 test copies of the site.  We upgraded one of the test sites to 4.8.3 and kept the other test site at 4.3.4.  When we didn't see any issues with the upgrade, we proceeded to upgrade the live site to 4.8.3.

The intermittent error occurs on the 4.8.3 version on the live and the test site.  However, we haven't been able to reproduce the behavior
on the other test site that is still running version 4.3.4.

It sounds as though you do not have permission to upload js files using the file manager. To check this, go to the host menu/HostSettings/advanced settings/other settings/ file upload extensions - make sure js is added to the list.

Lee, your attention to this issue is truly appreciated because it's driving me nuts.

js is included in the File Upload Extensions.  The error is intermittent when uploading the SAME js file into the SAME folder.

The scenario I just tried with each step performed within seconds of each other goes like this:
1.  Upload banner_rotator.js --successful.
2.  Upload same banner_rotator.js --successful again.
3.  Upload same banner_rotator.js --successful again.
4.  Upload same banner_rotator.js --throws error.
5.  Click return, upload banner_rotator.js -- successful this time.
6.  Upload same banner_rotator.js --throws error.

FTP?! - lol - seriously though I'm not sure why this would occur. Try uploading the file until the error occurs, then check your event log files and see if an error is displayed in the logs - this may provide some further clues.

Lee,

Thanks for your suggestion about checking event log.  Here's what I did...

First, in site Admin>> Event Viewer, I clicked Clear Log.  Next, using Admin>>File Manager, I uploaded the js file and it was successful.   Then, I tried to upload the same js file and it displayed the error:

An Error Has Occurred When Attempting To Save The File E:\WebAsset\_______\Portals\0\banners\banner_rotator.js. Please Contact Your Hosting Provider To Ensure The Appropriate Security Settings Have Been Enabled On The Server.  (see attached screen print)

I then checked Admin>> Event Viewer and it’s still empty.  I logged into the server, went into Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.  There were no warnings nor errors logged in the Application or System view at the time I got the upload error.

I'm tempted to try upgrading to 4.8.4 to see if that error goes away.  Are there any issues with that version?  As I mentioned before, I couldn't reproduce this error on a dev site that still has the 4.3.4 version.

Have you tried to re-apply the permissions for Network Service across the entire installation files? - Just to make sure they are applied correctly.

I would also be tempted to upgrade to 4.8.4 - I have not come across any issues, but I would do a test upgrade on a local computer first to ensure everything goes smoothly.

If you are going to upgrade, waitva few more days for 4.9.

Per Lee's suggestion, I removed NETWORK SERVICE from the website root then re-added it with Full Control permission.  I verified that folder E:\WebAsset\_______\Portals\0\banners and the banner_rotator.js file itself allows NETWORK SERVICE Full Control.  Then, I tried to upload the same js file.  It worked the first time but got the error when I tried to upload it again.

Joe, I'll wait until 4.9 is available to test the upgrade.

Thanks for assisting me with this issue.

Upgraded to 4.9 -- didn't resolve the problem.  The error still rears its ugly head intermittently.  Since file upload works sometimes, we'll just have to live with it.  Or as Lee jokingly suggested, ftp.

Is this a license issue? What is the exact error message?

We are having the error on version 4.9. Is there a resolution? This not only appears in the File Manager, but in the FckEditor as well when attempting to upload a document.

"An Error Has Occurred When Attempting To Save The File C:\Inetpub\vhosts\<>\httpdocs\Portals\0\2008_2009_Test_Document3.pdf. Please Contact Your Hosting Provider To Ensure The Appropriate Security Settings Have Been Enabled On The Server."

hello,

That could be two possibilities, first of all you need to check that your DotNetNuke installation is configured to allow the upload of PDF files.

To do this, go to host menu / HostSettings
Advanced settings / other settings

File upload extensions: - make sure pdf is in the list

If it is, you will then need to contact your hosting provider and make sure they have enabled all of the correct security permissions on your DotNetNuke installation files and folders.

Thanks,

dnnmq ... I have exactly the same issue.  All the permissions are there and yet when you try to upload the same file in the same location I get the same error.  I can upload new files all day long and twice on Sunday.

Running the latest version of DNN 5 ... all installations are doing the same thing.

Did you get this resolved?  If so ... please tell me how.

Thanks!

Tuaubinator,

The issue still recurs. Our site is load balanced and the files are synched by robocopy which might be the cause of the intermittent error when updating a file while robocopy is synching.

I had the same issue.

Cause:
There was 0kb on the drive hosting the portal.

Resolution: Freed up some space by deleting files.

Hope this helps.
