I upgraded a DNN 4.0.2 site to 4.07.00 in a test environment at my hosting service.  At first everything appeared to be fine, but I checked the User Accounts module since I knew there had been changes to that module.  The first thing I noticed was that searches based on the newly added search fields (4.0.2 had only username and email as potential search fields) such as First Name and Last Name returned no hits for what should have been direct matches.

Much more critical was that address and phone data, which had been present in the original database, was no longer there.  I adjusted the settings to display and require that data, but the fields were empty.  However, it would properly store new address data which I entered to existing records.

When I posed this issue to my host (PowerDNN) their response was "This is a known issue that we've seen with some upgrades to DNN with older versions. As far as I am aware, it is not possible to retrieve the old data."

Since I have more than 800 registered users, re-entering the data is not an option.  I have searched the dotnetnuke.com forums and can't find any mention of this issue.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Perhaps making the upgrade a two step process with two versions?  Is this an issue with 4.07 that I should just drop back to an earlier, more stable version (but higher than 4.0 - and if so, what version would you recommend?)

Many thanks,
Bud

I would recommend -  keep your live site at version 4.0.2 and create a backup of your website.

Take the backup and install it to a localhost installation
from there you can do all the testing that you require - ie. Test an upgrade to version 4.4 and see if you get the same problem. - I have not heard about losing registered users when upgrading to 4.7.

It may help to read about the process I went through for this upgrade How to Upgrade DotNetNuke v3.x to v4.4.1
as you will be able to use the same principles for your upgrade and testing in a localhost installation.

Thanks Lee.  This is a second test site.  It was easier for me to create a separate test domain at the host and have them do the upgrade than to create a  local installation.   The original site remains running on 4.0.2, thanks.  I am rolling the test site back to the original 4.0.2, will check to make sure the data is all there (and it was not the restore under 4.0.2 that lost it) then will upgrade to 4.4.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for a great magazine and your typical excellent support.

I have not heard of upgrades destroying user data. But ... it's not impossible. I just can't envision how that might happen. If you understand how data is stored in the database, you could actually take a look at the tables to verify that data is missing or -- even better -- find out what is wrong.

I do agree with Lee that you should do your upgrading on a copy of your site if possible. If it's not possible, make good backups ... and verify that the backups work before upgrading your site.
