I am over my head, with no time to accomplish what I really wish to have. My goal is a web site that can provide a moderated discussion list.  However getting through everything else is more than I can handle with all of my other responsibilities - I am not IT and am not a programmer.

So, I have someone who can set up a static web site for me and I can probably figure out how to develop the discussion forum module (especially if pointed in the right direction).

Ultimately I want to have the entire site in the dnn type of language.  But for now:

1.  If I simply set up my dnn site with a discussion forum module can I accesss it through a link on a static site?

Is that done by just putting in a link?  I want it to be something people have to register for?

2.  Where can I find the modules to be used for a forum set-up?

3.  What else should I read to help me get this to work?

I apologize for my simple questions - but I want to develop something that is a bit ahead of everything else we have - so there is no one I can go to for my questions.

Thank you.

Yes, use DotNetNuke and install the Forum module.  You can configure your forum or forums to be moderated.

All of this can be downloaded from the DotNetNuke site.

Yes, you can link to it from another site.

As for reading, look at the Beginner's Tutorials here.  Feel free to return and ask all of the questions that you might have.

Joe,

Thank you for the info on the forum module, I will look at that.

Where can I find the directions on how to link from static site to dnn site with forum?

I have looked at the beginning videos and even some of the later ones but need a lot more time to absorb. . so I am going forward.

I am in an educational setting, so $'s are limited also. It would be nice just to give someone my ideas and have them put them together, but have no one locally available and don't have resources to farm it out.

Right now, since I have someone who can ado a minimal static site I believe I will have to go with that so I can have a place to host a newsletter.

Then the next step will be put together the forum site and get it linked to - since that is what my constituents have asked for.

Ultimately I want to have a portal for users to access educational material through registration - and with discussion.

Overly ambitious probably perhaps for a very non techie, but I've said I am going to do it, so now I have to keep trying!

Also - are there any places I can find some simple free skins besides the standard dnn ones?

Thank you.

Eileen

Eileen,

To link, just get the URL for the forum from the DotNetNuke site and put that link in your static site.

Since you haven't built the static site, it really might be worth doing only one site - the DotNetNuke site.

There are several free skins here at DNN Creative. If you Google "Free DotNetNuke Skins" I'm sure that you will find others.
