When I switched my network from DSL to fiber most sites and downloads didn't allow me to download at anything near full speed. Most throttled me to DSL speeds.

I was surprised and pleased when I downloaded Issue 37 from your servers and I saw that I was getting 9.75Mb or 1.2MegaBytes per second.

Thanks for your great performance,

Wow, excellent - I wish I had broadband with that speed, the U.K. is very far behind, I have maximum speed available for my location, and my download speed averages 300k (on the files from DNNC). Also, to upload to the servers just for those main issue zip files took 8 hours!

I downloaded from the Chicago site at an average of about 1.8 MB/sec.

That caused me to run the speed test from Speakeasy.net

Site                       Upload Speed                   Download Speed
Washington          1.8 mb/sec                        15.6 mb/sec
Chicago                1.8                                     15.6  (11.4 on first try)
Seattle                  1.8                                     15.6

I tried several other cities, with approximately the same results.  My service is Verizon FIOS which brings a fiber optic cable to the house, where it is converted to ethernet.

Last time I tried this, perhaps 9 months ago, I noticed a decreasing speed as distance to the site increased.  I'm interested that there doesn't seem to be that behavior today.

wow, the UK has a long way to catch up for service. It takes them about a month to connect you up and then its snails pace in comparison to the US. - Well at least we get broadband now, 5 years ago when I was living in a village in the middle of nowhere you couldn't get broadband full stop, stuck with dial up at 33kb/sec download speed! - That was very painful!

Just tried the speakeasy test and full speed UK service is running at:

Download Speed: 2641 kbps (330.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 366 kbps (45.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Even though I supposedly have an 8mb connection lol

If you are running WindowsXP you should always run TCPOptimizer and tell it the speed of your line and have it set several TCPIP values. It cam make a real difference in Internet performance.  XP which first shipped in 2001, thinks everyone is running on dialup, while Vista actully dynamiclayy sets the buffer sizes and other parameters assuming that it is possible that you might be running faster than 56Kb.

When my speed was less than 5Mb, I had a pointer to a really good speed test that also check, jitter, packet loss, and VOIP MOS Score.

Since FIOS jumped me to 10Mb/2Mb, I have had problems find a speed test that actually showed that I had close to 10Mb.  This was one reason that I was so amazed.  FIOS's speedtest does show me at 9.5Mb

For what it's worth, I just tried the FIOS speed test. It's pretty much the same as I got from the Speakeasy test.

Hi Guys

I saw this discussion some days ago, and I started running some tests with the FIOS tool – result below.

I have a 12 Gig limit Cable connection (AUS $70.00 per month) from Bigpond, (Australia’s largest ISP) with an advertising talking about 30Mbps speed. – See below.

I have also an ADSL connection on 25 Gig maximum traffic (AUS $80.00 per month.

(Surprisingly I now found that my ADSL is faster than my Cable connection?!?!)

This is so called “unlimited connection” meaning that I don’t have to pay for excess usage, what happen is that my connection speed is slowed to 64 kbps (or in reality probably a lot less) when I exceed the limit. This – more or less - shuts down my internet, I’m unable to open many slow sites, including my ISP home page, and if someone sends me an E-mail on 1MB + then Outlook will time out and my E-mail service is blocked.

Below bigpond is talking about downloading an 850 MB move in less than 6 minutes – and at a cost of $29.97. Well, in Australia you get a total traffic allowance of 200 MB per month for that price, when you exceed the limit they charge you AUS $0.15 per MB!!

It’s not unusual that people get invoices on $1,000.00, $2,000.00 and even over $3,000.00 for a month of internet usage.

This is Australia for you!!  --  So enjoy your 21st century internet connection, real internet speed is a distant dream for Australians.

Cheers  - and have a great weekend...

Olle.

Speed Test: 18/10 4:20 Am                Cable            DownLoad: 0.858 Mbps          UpLoad: 0.125 Mbps

Speed Test: 18/10 5:30 Am                ADSL            DownLoad: 0.968 Mbps          UpLoad: 0.213 Mbps

Speed Test: 18/10 6:45 Am                Cable            DownLoad: 0.780 Mbps          UpLoad: 0.122 Mbps

Speed Test: 17/10 9:55 Am                Cable            DownLoad: 0.832 Mbps          UpLoad: 0.124 Mbps

The system slowed down remarkably so I did another check And test.

Speed Test: 1:10 Pm       Cable          DownLoad: 0.043 Mbps              UpLoad: 0.025 Mbps

Switched off the ASDL for a few days. – Checking speed the 16th October:

Speed Test: 6:15 Am       ADSL          DownLoad: 0.386 Mbps              UpLoad: 0.215 Mbps

Speed Test: 6:45 Am       Cable          DownLoad: 0.276 Mbps              UpLoad: 0.125 Mbps
