Crashing the Server:

Yes I ordered the Web Host “Re-Invent Inc” to wipe everything off one of the hostings / servers, including the database, and Install a fresh copy of DNN 04.09.00.

A bit drastic way of upgrading DNN, but this particular hosting was the first one when I started with DNN. There are irrelevant pages, bad design and solutions, non functional E-mails and Web Links, etc, etc…

So, starting with a very clean DNN 04.09, what do I need to do to prepare for a properly functioning and organized server:

I downloaded the HouseMenu which I will install.

I installed skin templates for the new CSS Skins, but never been able to use them.

(Error: template isn’t a proper Dot Net Nuke…..)

I will pretty quickly come up to 10 different Portals, have 5 or 6 Domains pointed already.

Any tutorial that can be helpful?

Considering the DNN is installed, this is only configuration.

Any Hints and ideas?

I'm not sure what you are looking for? - if you're looking for information on portals etc. Have a look at:
Issue 17 - DotNetNuke Portals

Hi

Yea, I've played with Portals a bit, was up to No: 30 in the previous hosting installation.

I guess it was more about use and installation order of templates and other settings.

I still haven’t figured out the use of Skin - templates?

Cheers....

You should have skins in the form of a zip file. Then, you visit Admin, Skins or Host, Skins and install them using the dropdown menu "Upload Skins". If there are containers in the zip file they also will be installed.

How are you installing them? Are there error messages when you install them? Do you see them listed on the Skins pages?

Thanks Joe

Yes I use the ZIP file for my skins, and I normally install the containers in their own ZIP file.

I successfully install the skins both through admin – site settings, and also through the “recourse – install” command

If I get error message it’s normally because windows creates a “temp.db” file in the image folder. (Which I go back and remove) - otherwise it all works fine. In addition I put up skin.css and image files straight through FTP upload.

It is the “skintemplates” I didn’t understand! I read somewhere that I should install the template before the skin, I believe the template installation I tried created a skin called “MinimalExtropy” or is that a DNN 4:9 default?

A site wizard template is available for download which will create a copy of http://skintemplates.dnncreative.com/summerbreeze on your DotNetNuke installation.

This will allow you to view the content and see how we have applied the various styles and layouts.
To install the site template:
 Extract the two files from the site template zip file
 Upload the files to your DotNetNuke installation: Portals / _default folder
 Login to your DotNetNuke portal as administrator
 Go to Admin / Site Wizard
 Click next and follow the instructions from the site wizard

ok, there are several terms getting used here. - The templates referred to with the dnn creative skins are portal templates, other templates that you can also create are page templates, which are available when creating a new page and will add a selection of modules with content just to that page.

MinimalExtropy - is a DNN4.9 default - it did not come with a template.

A portal template will add content to your entire portal, such as pages, modules, and assign skins to those pages.

You need to upload the template first, but before applying the template to your portal, you need to install the skin that the template uses, and if it also uses third-party modules you also need to install those modules first - such as the HouseMenu.

Once you have installed the skins and modules, you can then apply the template to your portal by going to the admin menu / site wizard.

Thanks Lee.

I probably done it in the wrong order.
I installed the template and then, tried to create a new portal.

I got some error about the template not being a proper Portal Templae.

I'll have another go at my next Site setup.

Cheers...

You should still be able to use a template when you create a portal, you just need to make sure that the modules and skins are already installed.
