Hello,

I want to upgrade from 4.05.03 to 4.08.02 on the production server. I have watched the video tutorial how to upgrade DotNetNuke from v3.x to v3.2 on a live website, and have already taken all the steps descriebed there. But by the time now I am somehow uncertain if it will work as well? My current installation uses SQLServer 2000, and uses also another skin than the default skins of DNN.

Do you have experience doing this? Would be greatful for your comments or hints.

Thanks

Yes it should work in exactly the same way, I would recommend you do a test upgrade on a localhost clone of your live website first as more often than not a first attemmpt at upgrading results in an error.

Even with custom skins, your settings will remain when you upgrade.

I have noticed in this forum that people have been recommending to upgrade to 4.6.2 before upgrading to 4.8.x - so you may need to test that if you find when you upgrade straight to 4.8.2 that you get errors.

Make sure you backup everything!

I would have a look at:

How to backup a live hosted DotNetNuke website and restore it to a localhost installation

How to Upgrade DotNetNuke v3.x to v4.4.1 which discusses some of the problems I came across and may help you if you get any errors.

I read recently that the problem upgrading from a version prior to 4.6.2 to 4.8.2 has been fixed. I haven't tested it.

Last week I upgraded a 4.4.1 site to 4.6.2 and then to 4.8.2 and that was successful.

So, if you're feeling brave, try updating directly to 4.8.2. Make sure, though, that you save copies of the database and web directory so that you can start over if there is a problem.

If you do the direct upgrade and it works, please let us know. We'll be able to change our advice that way.

Yep, it worked!

I just did the steps from the video tutorial and nothing else. By the last step (installtion url) first time  I got an error message as DNN wanted to initzialize Containers.zip and it aborted. I tried it again and this time I got the following error message:

The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider' threw an exception.

Click here to access your portal

I couldn't believe it, but I clicked here and I could access my portal, and everything works perfectly.
The DNN version is now 4.08.02

Many thanks for the kind helps

Is the "it" that worked a direct upgrade from 04.05.03 to 04.08.02? That's good to know.

It's possible that the first error was related to something cached. Let us know if there are any problems that surface, or if this was just a transient happening.

Yes. it was a direct upgrade from 04.05.03 to 04.08.02. Without testing on localhost etc.

First I made changes in web.config exactly as explained in this video tutorial: how to upgrade DotNetNuke from v3.x to v3.2 on a live website.

Then I put the .dll file on the production server. After that as I called the website this error message was there: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider' threw an exception.

Nevertheless I continued to the next step and put all the files on the production server. Then I tried to install the new version.

As I wrote before, first time the installation aborted, so I tried a secound time.  This time again this error message: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Data.DataProvider' threw an exception, and bellow Click  here to access your portal.

Hopelessly I hited this link and surprisely the website was there. Without any error. Since then I have installed some new modules and have added some new content. Everything workes pristine.

This is the url if you want to have a look at: www.eport.at.

Thanks again for the helps, and thank you Lee for the great tutorial!
