Today has been an adventure. I upgraded from 4.5 to 4.8. The update seemed to go fine, I was notified everything went OK then the site failed to load at all - it hung on opening.  I have restored everything but am wondering where to read the correct sequence or procedure for upgrading. Is it possible that one or some of the modules caused the upgrade to go south ?

Try upgrading t 4.6.2 first, and then upgrade to 4.8. I don't know why, but I do know that this works.

Apparently, there exists a situation with Providers that were integrated into the 4.6.1 (I believe), but you have to have that base installed first and then you can upgrade to the 4.8.1. We witnessed this in action at a DNN Users Group meeting during which the presenter was upgrading from 4.5.1 to 4.8.1. It failed on him when he tried to upgrade straight to 4.8.1, but once he installed the 4.6.2 upgrade he was able to then successfully upgrade to 4.8.1.

Websecure stores was awesome in their support - thi is what they found:

Hello,

Before rolling back, I tried to upgrade your site, it failed first time and gettiing following message:

The files '/App_Code/NukeSyndicate/DataProvider.cs' and '/App_Code/Survey/SurveyController.vb' use a different language, which is not allowed since they need to be compiled together

After I moved folder from wwwroot/App_Code/NukeSyndicate to wwwroot/NukeSyndicate, the upgrade was successful.

You may need reinstall or remove NukeSyndicate module.

We normally change $99 for DNN upgrade service, but we'll only charge $39.95 this time.

I got no error mesages when it upgraded.
