Sorry I do not know if this is the correct place to put this but I have been struggling with this problem for some time.

I have a site that has a forum and I need to move the forum and data and nothing else to its new home on another dnn instance and site. Is there anyway of doing this. You can export content for every other module that i have seen but not the forum I have already transfered the users without any problems. any help on this would be great I am running 4.6.2 of the dnn instance and 4.4.3 i believe of the forum. also is there any where i can learn about sql databases for dummies kind of thing I need to know more on this.

While I am here is there also anyway of seperating the portals in the sql database or a module so you can export an entire site so that you can move just 1 portal and if not is it not abit of a let down that we have this great program with a major issue. A customer asked me for a backup of his site the other day and I had to say no or he would of had all my customers information as well and this is where dnn fails.

Many Thanks for your time on this

Paul,

While I have not personally used them, I would recommend that you take a look at the backup products from evotiva.com. They are available at Snowcovered.com.

The Evotive.BackupScript is said to do this:

"full site backup & restore (no matter if the database is local or remote), even from scratch (no DNN running): the database (any size is supported, all BLOB columns are supported) plus all files and folders on the site (including \portals, \bin, \desktopmodules, web.config file, etc.). The database is scripted as standard, commented and readable .SQL files!. The module can build all the datababase objects and recreate the data."

My reading of this is that the database is "backed up" with scripts so that you can get at all of the data, should you need to do that.

Now, one problem that you'll encounter with moving a forum is that forum posts are identified with users so that you can't simply move posts without also having user names being moved to the new forum. This could be a problem if you don't want to do that.

There appear to be some "for dummies" books related to SQL. You want to make sure that you get a book that refers to the MS SQL variant. I have a copy of "SQL Server 2005 Programming" that I find useful. It's a little more advanced than "dummies" books, but is accessible. As a starter, there is also a nice tutorial on SQL at http://www.intermedia.net/support/sql/sqltut.asp. It will get you through the basics.

As for getting a copy of a single site, I'd probably suggest that you make a copy of the entire installation, move it to localhost, and then delete all but the portal of interest. Then, you'll probably want to make sure that you go through the database, and make sure that all references to other portals are actually gone and not just marked as deleted. Then you could use the evotiva script to generate a complete backup.

Transferring users is going to be one area where you'll need to be particularly careful. The "users" table in DNN doesn't separate users by portal. There are other tables where this is done. So ... some careful work will need to be done here, but not impossible.

Something you may want to consider in the future is to create a separate DotNetNuke installation for each of your clients, this will make it much easier to manage in the future. - I never share portals for clients - what if a client wants to upgrade their installation while another client makes use of a third party module that only works in the old version of DotNetNuke and can not use the latest version? - what if a client somehow corrupts the installation? - all sites will go down.

You may also want to view this video tutorial which is about to be released in issue 26: How to synchronize local and live DotNetNuke installations

Which allows you to  transfer and synchronise any data that you require from one database to another

You also may want to view: How to backup a live hosted DotNetNuke website and restore it to a localhost installation

as this may allow you to extract the data without needing to buy the backup products from evotiva - but also follow the tips Joe has mentioned above

Thanks For the intel guys but i have read all that on other sites I already have a backup of my dnn database using sql management studio and have already loaded it localy for test purposes. I have copied the users and now they are working fine on the new version of my customers site i did this if you are interested with a module from snowcovered only cost $19.95 but my problem is I have extracted all content and moved it but I can not find the forum information if I could just export the forum and then reload it in its new home that would be great. I will find a way and when I do I will share with you all. does anyone know how the dotnetnuke.com site move theres around.

anyway thanks again

also

As regards to independent dnn instances per customer it would cost me to much as I have to pay per sql database. If anyone fineds a way of extracting an entire portal with users and all content and not every portal on an instance at the click of a button it would be worth its wait in gold.

Thanks Again I appreciate all your help

If you are using the DotNetNuke Forum module, all of that information is stored in database tables that begin with "Forum_". If you just need to move everyting intact, you can use the tools in SQL Server Management Studio to move those tables from the old database to the new one.

Could you tell us the name of the $19.95 module that you found useful? I'm sure that others may be interested.

The Program I used to export the users and the import them into the new install is

Bulk User Import & Export 3.6.4 Standart Edition

for $19.95

you can find it at snowcovered

http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=5201

Regards
Paul

P.S. I believe I have found a way to move my forum as well manually if it works I will let you know and I will make a module hopefully to do this automatically.
