I am trying to implement a secondary vertical navigation so that the page name appears at the top, with children pages following.  Does anyone have any suggestions about how to do this?

I recognize that I will have to replace the dnn: MENU with a new module/set of them?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

My suggestion is to use Snapsis Nav Menu. Then, I'd ask John Mitchell how to accomplish his.

One thought, with the new Text/HTML module, you can put a module in the left column that displays the page name. You could then use a menu that displays only children of the current page. Snapsis does this fairly easily.
