Exporting and transferring Modules. / The LINKS Module

Hi Again.

Or Good morning

It’s 6:00 Am a Friday Morning, a bit chilly but a beautiful Spring Morning in South East Queensland – Australia.

I am using the “Link” module and it grows to quite a few Links, including DNN and DNN Creative which I try to keep in there.

Firstly:

Are there an easier way to load links to that module, I go through the “New Link” process and install one by one.

Secondly:

How do I “Export” or transfer this Module – and it’s Links – to different Portal and different DNN Installations.

I am setting up several; small websites, and it’s a tedious work to sit and reload the Link Module for each of them.

THANKS

The Links module has an Export Content menu option when you are in edit mode.  You can do that, and then transfer the exported file to another portal.  Install a links module there and then Import Content.

as it happens I have just discovered today a really really really good way of adding multiple data to the documents module, and the same principle can be applied to the links module.

Each month we have around 60 URLs to add into the documents modules - as you can imagine this is really tedious and takes forever, I've just found a very quick way of adding the data to the documents modules using Excel.

You'll need access to your DotNetNuke database:

Open the table for the module, ie. Documents or Links

In here you will see the table column structure
copy the table column structure into an Excel file

Add the data that you require to add to the module (do not put any data in the first column ItemID as SQL Server automatically enters that data)

For the ModuleID column - add a module to your DNN portal - go the settings of the module and look at the URL to identify the moduleID - this is the value you enter in this column.

When you have finished your Excel file, select all of the rows of data and press CTRL+C to copy them
click on the bottom row in the Links Table in SQL Server where there is a* press Ctrl+V

If there is a large list, it will take a while for it to paste in the data, but you should find that this enters all of the data that you require.

What was a 2hr job is now 5mins!!!

PPS. Backup your database before attempting anything like this!

Bummer

Seems like it’s time for a new Web Host company.

As I mentioned, Re-Invent doesn’t allow me access to the DataBase, and charge $15.00 each time I want a backup or restore.

Sound like a great and simple Idea, I used it in many other applications, (including uploading keywords to “7-Search.com) but I need to solve my database access problem.

Cheers….

PS. Congratulations to saving almost 2 hours in monthly work load.

Yes, I think you will find that having open and free access to your database is essential for running DotNetNuke websites, good luck with your search for a hosting provider and make sure you read the comments on hosting providers in this forum.

Thanks Lee!

Yes I will check out the Forum – and the hosts before I sign up.

I expect to see an order for the Apartment booking site in a week or so, I probably need to organise hosting before I start that project.

Another problem with Re-Invent was that I (on the hosting I recently cleaned out.) had a server usage of about 15%, while my database usage was at 85%!! – and they of cause wanted to add $5.00 per month to increase database space.

I have very small sites, maybe 10 15 active portals on the hosting, and no customer or mailing lists. So, is this a common imbalance with Dot Net Nuke hosting?

Cheers for now.

Hello,

well all the data for text etc is stored in the database, so you may find the database becomes larger than the actual site files if you do not have many images etc in your site files. Having said this, the SQL database should not grow that large for small sites.

Thanks Joe!

Just tested and it works fine.

Only thing was that I could only save in the portal root where I created the Link Module, I had to move the file in my FTP-program to be able to import it to a module in a different portal.

Cheers
