We have been struggling with the sort order feature in the newest version of the documents module.  When we add a sort order by index, title ect., we view the page and the sort order is not recognized. One suggestion was to hard code the stored procedure to SortByIndex; however we have a big department with a necessity for a variety of sort criteria and this was not a viable solution. The dnn team did not seem to have a solution for the problem. All of our documents have index numbers and the appropriate sort criteria are added under settings. The only sort feature that does work is "User enabled sort". Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have a fix for this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

If the developers of the Documents Module tell you that this isn't in the current module, I doubt that there's a way to do it short of modifying the module. That's not something that I'd recommend.

Instead, I'd recommend that you report this as either a bug or a feature request (if they say it's not in the module, then it's probably a feature request). Hopefully, that will be implemented in a future version.
