    Hi Lee!

I was going through your video tutorial #3 in issue-17 which is about creating a sub-domain as a new parent portal. Here in the "audiotuition" example you were adding a new HOST HEADER to the domain name through the control panel of your hosting provider.

Now my hosting provider doesn't mention the word
"HOST HEADER" but says i can purchase extra "Sub-Domains". So does this mean that my provider is charging for every new HOST HEADER, which yours is giving for free?

if yes then please let me know which hosting provider you use, because i am planning to create lots of parent portals using the sub-domain method as described in your tutorial.

    Thanks in advance,
    Raghu.

    More Information:

    - I am planning to host all DNN portals on my own server (hence i'll have full control over IIS).

    - All portals shall be subdomains of a single domain (sub1.mysite.com, sub2.mysite.com.....). Therefore i want my hosting provider (which actually should be called the domain registrar) to forward *.mysite.com to the IP of my server, assuming that the DNN will read the host headrer from the request and display the correct parent portal.

I am getting really confused on this last point, hope you can throw some light on how the things should be set-up.

    Hello,

Not all hosting providers give you access to the host headers and they charge you for pointing an additional domain to your DotNetNuke installation. - The host headers will allow you to create parent portals that use any URL not just subdomains, so on my hosting account I could have for example:

    www.mywebsite.com
    www.atotallydifferentwebsite.com
    www.yetanothersite.com

Each of these is entered into their host headers and allows the DotNetNuke installation to pick up the domain name and point it to the correct portal.

If you want to set this up I use reseller choice, you can see comments about them here:
    Reseller Choice

There is some setup time involved as you have to configure the hosting control panel before you get started, but there are videos to help you work it out and they have good support to help you.

Bonus: If you enter this coupon code: LS20
when signing up to ResellerChoice you will get 20Gigs of bandwidth for free

    Thanks,

My hosting company uses HSphere control panel and all you do is:

-Click on the top level domain name and click on the ADD icon for Domain Aliases
-Then you only need to type "domainname.com" and check the box for DNS. HSphere automatically adds "*.domainname.com" to the A Record so "www.domainname.com" will work too. You can even add mail services for each of the parent portals!

All of the other steps in Issue 17 are the same.

Hope this helps everyone with this style control panel!
