is there a size limit recommended for .swf files to run on dnn ver.5 any best practices thanks in advance for any help.

The simplest answer is as small as possible. It doesn't matter what version of DotNetNuke you are running on, or even if it is a standard html website, the same rules apply for making sure the pages load as quickly as possible. You need to consider what speed connection most of your visitors will have and if you can stream the swf file how long it takes before the file begins playing and if it can play without stuttering.
