i've followed the instructions given in the video for dnn installations on Win7 ... applying them to w2k8 r2 server.

i am able to access the newly created dnn site via the URL http://localhost/ (on a Cloud Server at RackSpace), however, when i try to access the site via FireFox or IE8 from my home machine (http:///, FF gives the error: Problem loading page and IE gives the error: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

now, i can display the root page of the Default Web Site (the IIS7 banner etc) with the URL http://.

so there is nothing wrong with IIS 7 configuration or the Firewall settings on the w2k8 r2 cloud server.

i am tending toward the conclusion that there is a problem with permissions on the Application directory.

now, following the Win7 dnn 5.x installation instructions, when we get to the "Add Application" (to the Default Web Site) section i am confused that we specify the "Classic .NET AppPool" (and NOT DefaultAppPool) when setting up the application, BUT, then later, when adding Users to the Application directory permissions list, we add the user IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool and NOT IIS AppPool\Classic .NET AppPool.  (i have tried and succeeded in adding the IIS AppPool\Classic .NET AppPool User to the permissions list ... it can be done ... however it did not fix my problem).

Having added the Application Alias, Application Pool, and Physical Path, and set Connect As to Application User (pass-through authentication), i then click on the Test Settings... button, and am presented with a dialog displaying results of the connection test.  the Authentication test passes ("The application pool iden y is valid"), however, the Authorization test has a warning symbol (exclamation mark in yellow triangle) with the following Details:

******************************************************************
Authorization: Cannot verify access to path (C:\DotNetNuke Sites\)

   - The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path.
   - However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access.
   - Make sure that the application pool iden y has Read access to the physical path.
   - If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool iden y is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that \$ has Read access to the physical path.
   - Then test these settings again.
******************************************************************

So i have entries in the Application directory list for both DefaultAppPool and Classic .NET AppPool, with read access for both application pool iden ies, but i am still unable to access the dnn site with the url http:/// from a computer on the internet (external network).

note: the server is NOT joined to a domain, just a member of generic "Workgroup".

any clues?

Check to make sure that DNS points the site's URL to the web directory.  Your host ought to be able to help you with this.
