Hello, I recently upgraded 2 websites from DNN 4.9.5 to version 5.01.04. Both sites are having the same problem: I am getting an error when I try to make any changes to the Admin Site Settings. When I try to "update" I get this error. ( and it does not save anything): An error has occurred. Error: Site Settings is currently unavailable. ( error has red circle with x in the middle of it) I posted this error on the dotnetnuke.com general forum several days ago, but have received no replies. I don't know about the rest of you all, but I have have had nothing but glitches trying to upgrade DNN4 to DNN5. Several times I have opted to just start over with a fresh installation of DNN5, versus risking an upgrade from DNN 4. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Did you get any errors appear in the report when you upgraded?

Are you testing the upgrade on a localhost installation?

Will Strohl has posted a suggested upgrade path here

He is recommending to try 4.9.5 to 5.0.01, and then immediately upgrading 5.0.01 to 5.1.4 and then to 5.2.2

I would be tempted to try:

    4.9.5 to 5.0.01 then to 5.2.2

Hi Lee, Thanks for the fast response. First I would like to say that your website and videos are a huge assett to the DNN community. I never go wrong when I seek information from your site, especially from your videos. ( which are excellent). As far as my upgrade, I made it on a live site ( mistake). Of course, it was one of my own projects and not that of a client, so it could be worse. I really need to set up a test environment on my local. Regarding installation errors, I can't remember seeing any errors upon upgrade. Other than this error, the site works ok. I can't do things like change my logo and probably other things that i have not yet tried, but the site does work. I am wondering if I should just start over. I have a lot of pictures uploaded in Ultimate Media Gallery 5, other than that, not much else. Speaking of this, I am having a problem with that module as well, as I upgraded it incorrectly just earlier today (I am on a roll, brother!). I can have the host run a backup for the site to give me another shot at the module upgrade, but still need to find a solution ( if ther is one) to the DNN upgrade issue, I am thinking that maybe I need to start over. Is there anyone I could possibly hire to fix the problem? Thanks in advance

Joe maybe available to hire to fix the problem, if you reply to the email that this forum sends I will pass on your details.

For any upgrades I would always recommend you test it in localhost first. If you get errors when upgrading I would always revert back to the backup and start again, the reason is that the problems are likely to get worse in the future when you need to upgrade again.

For your reference I would install a virtual PC and look at these tutorials:
How to setup and use Microsoft Virtual PC 2007

Then get a fresh install of DNN working:

Then try installing a backup to your local install:

    Hi Lee,

Thanks for hooking me up with all of that good information. I will make very good use of it. It's time I got with the program and started using a test environment before experimenting on live sites. It's something I have been putting off. I heard from Joe, Thanks again.

George's problem was that the upgrade to 05.01.04 left the default language (English) not enabled.  I had to get into the Language Editor and enable it.  The solution to this problem is documented here, in case anyone runs into this problem again.
