First, I apologize if this topic has already been covered.

I am creating a new website which is going to replace one that already exists on a different host (deervalleyconnections.com). This new website will be added as an additional primary portal to my DNN framework. I want to be able to view progress before the real domain name (deervalleyconnections.com) is transferred to my server, so my plan is to create a sub domain to my site (dvc.projcomplete.com). I don't think that this will be a problem. The question I have is this. Once I am ready to go live and point the deervalleyconnections.com domain name to my server, will I be able to add the alias deervalleyconnections.com to this portal, remove the dvc.projcomplete.com sub-domain alias, and expect everything to work using deervalleyconnections.com? I think I can but I would like your opinion before I proceed. Thanks.

Assuming that you don't have any hard-coded links that include the domain name, yes.
