Hi,

My goal is to create a portal where I can copy my site and try out different skins and modules, without affecting my main site.

So, I watched the portals videos and created a child portal www.riverfriends.org/test

When I created it I used a template that I generated from my main portal (where I check the box to include content)

When enter the www.riverfriends.org/test address in my browser, it changes it to www.riverfriends.org . I login, but I am clearly on my main site, beause changes I make are reflected on my site.

Total newbie.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
John

if you go to admin menu / portals can you view the settings for the new portal? does the new portal have an additional portal alias?

Or does the default portal have an additional portal alias - see if they are pointing back to riverfriends.org

When I go to Host>Portals I see the new portal.  It has just one alias, www.riverfriends.org/test, shown on the table.

The default portal shows the following under "aliases" in the table:
www.riverfriends.org
60.80.208.205/riverfriendsorg

Now, I am able to go to the test portal and move around among pages.  However, if I login, the "test" disappears from the URL and I am back on my default site.

It must be pointing back somewhere, but I am at a loss as to where to look.

Other thoughts?

not sure, it appears as though the aliases are ok.

Is there by any chance an expiry date next to the child portal in host menu / portals?

What are you logging in as for the "test" to disappear? - Does it still remain when logged in as host?

Are you logging in as the administrator for the child portal that you created and not the administrator for the original portal?

One thing to note is that in your first post you said you wanted to create a child portal to test skins and modules. Be aware that you are still testing this in the same DNN installation even though it is a separate portal. For instance if you decide on testing out a free module that is buggy and causes problems, it could potentially cause problems for all of your portals.

For testing I recommend you install a localhost copy of DNN and install modules and skins to a local copy, this way you completely avoid messing up your live site.
